View Full Version : Are the romainian wasr 10-63 worth buying.
I am in the process of getting another ak and had a wasr before but it jammed alot, are they all like this or did i just get a lemon. They are also hard to find here in ohio anymore.
They can be very hit and miss. They are pretty much bottom of the barrel but if you get a good one they will run as good as anything out there. Mine was fine but it was "hand picked" and then I had some other work done to it custom. If you look at places such as Henderson Defense and JG Sales, as well as others, they will actually pick out the good ones and then test fire them at the range and make sure the sights aren't canted etc. If you blindly buy a WASR it's a crap shoot in my opinion. I know that can be said for any firearm though so take it for what it's worth. I'm not sure it's possible for you but the best way would be to take whatever rifle you're looking at buying to a gunsmith and have them check the headspacing, bore, sights for canting etc. then you know with confidence what you're buying but that is usually not possible unless you know the parties involved in the sale.
I bought a WASR knowing that it was a low end AK,but the recent ones from Century were supposed to be improved. They come with tapco triggers, and they did some work to improve mag wobble. They also fixed some of the site and gas block canting. That being said I took mine to the range and put 300 + rounds thru it. It was plenty accurate for what its worth but I had several feeding issues that told me there was something wrong with the gun. After searching the web I found that the gas piston on the WASR's are welded ( from Century) instead of pinned like they should be. So instead of sending it back to Century for more hacking, I sent it to Jim Fuller at Rifle Dynamics for a total WASR rework. For what I paid for the gun ( 425) + the cost for the rework, I could have spent a little more and had one of his Arsenals or Saiga's, had I known about his work first. If I could do it over I would have skipped the WASR and went straight to Fullers or K-VAR at least. Looking forward to getting the WASR back, he does some amazing work !

I'd buy a WASR all day long as long as I could look at it first and give it a once over.

I just got one from JG, the mag wobbles and the sight is canted but it's a WASR it will fire every time. I will suggest you definitely the 10/63 there just a bit better.

yep - good call.

Is the cheapest house in town the one you want to live in? Is the cheapest car in your dealer's lot the one you want to drive? Is the cheapest coat in the store the one you want to wear this winter? I doubt it.
Then why would you want the cheapest AK style rifle you can find? Spend a little more and get a decent Hungarian or Yugo. Spend a little more than that for a really nice converted MAK90 or Arsenal converted Saiga. You're only looking at $100-$300 more, and you get a very nice rifle rather than the most poorly fitted and finished AK version currently made.

true.
How well made are the polish ones.

When I just want a place to crash when I'm in that town - yes. Cheapest house. Just need a basher car to get from a to b. Yep - cheapest thing I can find. Cheapest coat - does it fit and keep me warm? If I have no jacket - yep. I want it cheap and I want it now - especially if I need a hat and gloves and boots too!
If I want another house or car besides my main one - yep. Again - does a cheap Ford get me there? Maybe not in the same style as a BMW 7 series. But it gets the job done and that's all I need. In fact - it gets the job done better because I have more money for gas and pay less insurance.
Again - fit & finish LOOKS nice. But does it work any better? (Well, yes - mty arsenal does work "better" but is no more "effective" for twice the price.)
Cost / benefit man...
I bought a Yugo M70 instead of a WASR, and I don't regret the decision. My mag wobble seems to vary by magazine, but for the most part it's super tight, especially with Yugo mags.
I'm contemplating getting a second AK, and I'm thinking about the WASR's because they're pretty damn cheap. I didn't know the gas tube was welded...how the hell do you clean it?

I don't know if they are all welded but mine looked like it was screwed in then tac welded then painted over.It did have a pin hole, but no pin. A wasr can be good right out of the box, I thought mine was but I didn't know about the piston thing or I would have checked it. Just something else to look over when your buying one.

My WASR has ran 100%. I think it was about $400 out the door 3 years ago. They are hit and miss but they are better now than they use to be IMO. Arsenal makes a nice AK but does cost more money than I would spend on this platform. In the recent issue of Guns&Ammo Complete Book Of The AK47 there is a article about http://www.ioinc.us/
They seem to be very well made, much better than a WASR with many improvements such as more accurate barrels. They also said they are keeping there prices low to sell as many as they can versus selling fewer for more. So for about the same price or just a little more than a WASR you can have a better AK47 IMO.
I'm thinking about getting a Draco in the place of a WASR...

I have 2 buddies that have draco's and unless I was going to SBR the draco I'm still get the wasr.
You'll miss being able to shoulder the gun and without one the draco is more of a novelty.

The guy above said the gas piston was welded. the tube can still be released by the lever on the front trunion and be removed.

Yes, what I ment was the piston is welded to the bolt carrier instead of having a pin in it.
I had one, the general look and feel for me was poor BUT it went bang everytime and was a blast to shoot. However I have had some issues with others. But for the prices right now I wouldnt hesitate. They are very fun guns thats for sure
I re-done the stock on mine and put black synthetic handguards on and it looks as good as any other AK.
I was more addressing the fit an finsh of the gun. Pure aesthetic's they are on par with most ak's...

I have an Arsenal and a masterpiece done by Marc Krebs. Problems with both is that I'm not about to drag either through mud or do anything to scratch or ding them up. My solution was to buy a WASR to use-who cares if it gets beat to heck, it never was pretty to begin with.
An AK isnt supposed to pretty. They look better in that used look. Although mine is pretty dam clean and looks new.

An Arsenal is an $800 AK, not a $2000 collectible Colt SAA. I beat the holy crap out of mine, and she still works great. I think it looks a little better now that it has some character, and I definitely trust it more because I've seen what it can shrug off.
