Can the factory SIG p229r 9mm be converted to .40 S&W with just a barrel swap or only the P229r .40 S&W be converted to 9mm?

You can not make the 9mm 229R into either .40/.357Sig.

You can take a .40 229R and with just a barrel change go to .357 or vice versa.

You can take a .40/.357 229R and get a Barsto 9mm barrel, a different extractor, recoil spring, a 9mm magazine, and shoot 9mm.

I was 99% sure that was the case. Thanks!!!!

or you can get a conversion kit from topgun supply since the 22 converision units are out . you get slide barrel recoil assemble and 1 mag.

I don't think the 9mm frame is strong enough to just swap a .40 barrel in there.

Actually, the P229 was designed specifically to accomodate .40 S&W and .357 Sig pressures.

The issue with "swapping" a .40 barrel is with the smaller 9mm slide breechface not acomodating the larger .40 rim.

i disagree with a portion of this statement. i run a 9mm Barsto conversion barrel in my 226 40S&W, all i change is the barrel and the magazines. several hundred flawless rounds through this setup

In theory, that makes some sense, but a gunsmith would argue that since the breechface and extractor are set up for .40, then using a 9mm barrel would jeopardize reliability.

You will be able to do that. The extractors ARE different though, it is fine for a range gun, just to be able to shoot the less expensive 9mm.
It WILL fail at times though, not good if you are shooting competition, DEFINITLEY not good, if God forbid, you are in a gun fight.
