View Full Version : what type of steel for a .22 receiver?

Guy I know is looking to build a single shot .22 and is wanting to know what type of steel would be the best for the receiver, firing pin, hammer, etc.

Looks like he plans to do this from scratch. He's uncertain as to what hardness for the hammer and firing pin as well. RC 50 for the hammer? presumably RC 55 or better for the pin? Taking a guess on the hardness.

I've done a little bit of gunsmithing but nothing from scratch, so I told him I'd look around for some answers.

All I know is M14 receivers are 8620 steel.

A .22 doesn't call for exotic alloys.
I'd get him a copy of 'Mr Single Shot's Book of Rifle Plans' and see what Frank DeHaas had to say about it.
