SO I turned 21 on Saturday and went on Monday, tall and proud, to purchase my handgun permit from my local Sheriff Dept. (McDowell Co., North Carolina) After I fill out the paperwork, they tell me that they can't issue it to me because I have a pending speeding ticket and I will have to wait until AFTER my court date to actually pay for it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was my understanding that a non-felony, non-misdemeanor speeding ticket was NOT grounds for denial. I understand if I had been the defendant in a hit and run case or something major, but I was just speeding. I don't need to be told I'm a dumb kid doing dumb things because I already know that. Now I'm paying the price out of my own pocket like a responsible man accepting the consequences for his actions.

I'm about to take the def. driving class tomorrow and plea to improper equipment. Would this change my permit situation, or am I gonna be stuck in this boat regardless?

For a pistol purchase permit you are pretty much at the mercy of the sheriff and what ever hoops they have placed for getting the permit.

Sounds like a great reason to get your CHP and then you don't have to worry about the purchase permits.

Screw NC. I find the fact that you need a purchase permit in NC to be a ridiculous violation of your 2A rights.

Yeah, we have to get our federally-mandated background check done ahead of time, instead of waiting for it at the time of purchase. But at least we can buy five handguns all at the same time, unlike some states that restrict you to one handgun per 30 days.

I can buy as many handguns per month as I want.:winkie:

Only if you maintain a VA CHP.

So long as you stay in Va we will just have to live with these onerous conditions. Move here and set us free! Not.

Get your CHP and you won't have to deal with purchase permits anymore, plus you can conceal carry.

I wish they had succeeded in standardising all 100 counties last year. I live in Stokes County & they only issue 2 permits a day when the county next door does as many as you want.

That's kinda funny aint it? I love it when someone says something about NC not knowing how backwards their state is.

I agree with the other poster... go through the Conceal Carry Class... and apply for your carry permit... the Sheriff will most likely gladly give you a carry license if you spend the money and training on the class... shows him you are 'responsible'
Otherwise the speeding ticket gives him an excuse to state you are 'irresponsible'

Let us know how you make out... my 16 year old daughter thinks it is 'So unfair' that she has to wait until she is 21 to CC.
