I ran into a guy the other day who was talking about his Taurus Public Defender and got talking about ammo for it. He said that 000 buck was smaller than 00 buck, but that sounded odd since the 000 usually has fewer pellets (implication that they are larger???). Does anyone know the size/caliber of the pellets used in each of these? Thanks in advance!

He is incorrect, here is how it breaks down.

0000 - .38" dia.
000 - .36" dia.
00 - .33" dia
0 - .32" dia

+1 to RedHaze, that diagram is a perfect reference.

In my tests, 000 shoots smaller patterns than 00, but 000 pellets themselves are bigger than 00.

Buckshot is not like steel wool, where the more 0's you have
the smaller or finer it gets.
Nice chart Red, I'm gonna save that one.

It'd be nice if it gave the actual caliber size of the shot as well... but for googling shotgun shot size it's not half bad.

Here's one with diameters. An easy way to figure the diameter of a birdshot pellet is to subtract the size number from 17, and move the decimal to the left two places (for #8, 17-8, move the decimal, you get .09)

Have to add pellet count to this. Taken from Cabela's Remington 2 3/4" buckshot.

3 buck 20
1 buck 16
00 buck 9
000 buck 8

Everyone has to make this call for themselves but I like 16 pellets in the 1 buck at .30 vs. the 9 bellets in the 00 at .32 and 20 pellets in the 3 buck at .25.

That said they are all pretty much the same amount of lead, what ever they can fit into your shell - 2 3/4, 3 or 3 1/2. And 00 buck seems to be the easiest to find in my experience.

After all the penetration tests I have done with buckshot, I prefer 000. You would be suprised at how little it takes to stop buckshot.

Did this guy work for Gander Mountain?

Or the Bass Pro Shops near where I live?

I have had two associates in there claim there is a video of the .410 PDX1 for the Judge being used to shoot a 200+ pound dummy and knocking it back at least 15 feet. They might have even claimed 15 yards. They definitely need to lay off of whatever it is they are smoking.

The topic that refuses to die.

It has been show ad nauseum that #1 buck is the best of both worlds as 16 pellets cause more ¨mass on target¨ yet still are large.

Did you even bother to read the original post? This is not a "which is better" thread.

That said, why do you always get worked up when a topic gets brought up more than once? This is a forum for discussion, not a library.

The first time I heard one of them say it, it was to another customer. A good buddy of mine from NC and I were at the gun counter when he said it. My buddy looked at me, with the classic "Did I just hear what I THINK I just heard?" look on his face, followed by him muttering something to the effect of the guy needed to be slapped.

i'm not one for correcting most people, but damn.. when information is so incorrect you just have to correct if for the betterment of everyone else that could potentially receive that b.s. info from that degenerate!

We held our tongues, but next time I was in there I made a comment to another associate about it. He said it was true, and I attempted to correct him. He preferred to believe this non-existent video over what someone else politely told him. I suggested he look up Newton's Third Law.

I am happy with anything between #4 buck and 00 buck. All are powerful and do a lot of damage. My preference is for #4 or #1, but good old 00 buck is fine. I think 000 is a case of not enough pellets and more penetration than necessary.

00BK because 000BK doesn't pattern very well in any gun I have tried.

I guess because I remember what I read as well as I don´t feel the infantile need for attention that so many do by making repetitive posts. :wavey:
