View Full Version : wich grain
for a 300wsm 150 or 180 for south Texas deer and hog ? Thanks.......:wavey:
november , thank you but in my area ( not wanting to travel to far or buying on line ) i can only find 150 grain silver tips or 180 gr xp 3......:wavey:
I think bullet construction matters more then bullet weight.
But given the choice of a 150 gr silver tip or a 180 XP3 I'd choose the 150 silver tip. I just don't think you need the 180, the 150 should have a little flatter trajectory and a little lighter recoil.
Either one of them will kill deer or hogs very well.
FWIW, On their web site Winchester has a "Choose Your Ammo" tab. If you select hunting, White Tailed Deer, and the .300 WSM both the Silver Tip 150 and the XP3 180 are listed as suitable bullets.
I think the best answer would be to shoot them both in your gun and see which is more accurate.
VAFISH , thanx as you have always been helpful , think ill go with the 150 st...:wavey:
Anybody else shoot the silvertip bullets and if so how do you like them ?
I shoot and uses the 150grain superx ST in my 30-06 for deer and they are rock solid with accuracy and performance for 4 legged deer. Energy and velocity out of the 30-06sprg is slight less than a 300WSM. You should do fine in the 300WSM imho.
FWIW: For pricing and performance and availability, you use to beable to get these in the 150gr 30-06 for about 12.99-14.99 per 20 at wally mart.
the 300WSM , would probably be slighty more expensive and harder to find at wally mart or at least in my neighborhood. The ballistic tips would be slightly more or at least double.
