Depends on what you're transporting. Badgers, guns, or moonshine.

For guns if no CHP, you need to either have them cased (locked case and unloaded is best) and out of reach of any occupants of the vehicle or out and plainly visible such as on the dash or maybe the passenger seat if there isn't anything obstructing the view of an approaching officer.

Now transporting badgers require special harnesses and the proper licenses.

Depends which Carolina you're asking about. Here in S.C. you can legally carry a loaded handgun in your vehicle without a CWP.

9) a person in a vehicle if the handgun is secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle; however, this item is not violated if the glove compartment, console, or trunk is opened in the presence of a law enforcement officer for the sole purpose of retrieving a driverís license, registration, or proof of insurance;
