Not yet but next season I'm going to try 10mm Silvertips on the small local deer. Close, relaxed shots only.

We talking handgun or rifle? I think handgun STHP are way too soft for hunting anything but smallish deer. For rifles, I saw the results of a well palced 30-06 180grST on a bull elk about 100yds impact. The bull went down but thrashed around for a good bit & we only found fragmenst of the bullet, it did not exit from a broadside double lungshot. Not for me thanks.

fredj338 , why not for you ? Is it because the bullett did not exit or because the animal did not die right away ?....Thanx.................:wavey:

It was a perfect broadside shot, clipped a rib going in & then fragged. The elk went down took about 5-6min to die. It could not run, lungs were gone,. but had that shot gone in hard 1/4 front or rear, or been up on the shoulder, that elk would have run, along way, into some deep, dark tangle. I want my hunting bullets to completely penetrate on a broadside shot, rib or not. That insures I get good penetration on 1/4ing shots & reach vitals. My style of hunting dictates being able to make shots from any angle, not just double lung, broadside. For deer size game, that particular round would have been fine, but IMO, too thin a jacket for larger game like elk @ close range. Add another 100yds, slow it down a bit, it would have performed a bit better.
It's all how you hunt & what & what with. I don't stand hunt much, so shots can come at 50yds or 400yds. I want a bullet that works close or far, fast or slow. The WST works great out past 250yds or so, but inside 100yds, big maybe depending on shot placement & size of animal.:dunno:

Excellent advice to which I personally subscribe as well.

It would depend on bullet wt & shot placement. Through the lungs, the 150gr will work great. Into the shoulder, probably lose that shoulder. The 180gr would work for most shot palcements. It just depends on your hunting style. If you can wait for broadside double lung shots, most any bullet will work on deer.
