Toying with the idea of one more 1911 pistol. First choice is 45 ACP and Commander size 4 in barrel up to 5 in barrel. As for brand, since at my age it may be my last pistol, looking at Kimber, STI. Les Bear and or Wilson. Primary use will be on the range for practical tactical shooting and home defense. Single stack over double stack. Bottom line just a good looking quality pistol to eventually pass on to my son and son in law. looking for comments. I already own an STI and a Kimber so I am happy with their quality but to explore other makes of equal or better quality. Thanks

Well, I'm also researching 1911s and I've put my sights on a regular Les Baer Thunder Ranch. Simplicity, reliability, tight tolerances and wonderful craftsmanship. I'm sure the others you mentioned are also great guns but that's the direction I'm going in.

Since you already have the others I think I would go after a Baer. I think the consensus here is they are well worth the $$. I would love to have one but mine are carry guns and I don't want it sitting in the safe like a pristine mushroom. Ah, maybe someday...

For the money, I' d say the STI would be a bargain.

I appreciate the comments. I am leaning towards a Les Bear with a high vis front sight. not the the STI's are not great guns. I shoot a Steelmaster in 9MM in matches and I'm picking up a Shadow this week for my wife, also in 9MM

Hope others will chime in with suggestions. There are so many great 1911's out there and so little money and life to enjoy them.

My current carry is a Glock 26, an amazingly accurate little pistol that always works.

Honestly, it's hard to go wrong with Baer or Wilson for those applications.

If yer going to spend that kind of $$ why not look into http://www.volkmanncustom.com/
That way you can get a nice hand built piece that you could pass along.. ask Bac about him.. he knows quite a bit about him..

Les Baer TRS. you said you are exploring other 1911s, the LB is nothing like any other 1911 fit wise. I think you will be happy with it. I carry mine daily and compete in IDPA monthly.

OK guys you have about moved me where i want to go ie Les Bear. Now what is the average wait time for a Bear? Being an old fighter pilot patience is not one of my strong traits.

By the way Dakrat, what do you fly?

I dont fly. I get it ready

if you are set on Les Baer, give John a call @ www.proload.com. He have the best price and customer service. your pistol will be on your hip the next day

I'll add another recommendation for the Baer (both of mine proved to be excellent, and my Premier II is still the most accurate handgun I've ever shot). I'll also highly recommend John at ProLoad. I used to shop in his store when he was in Idaho. His selection and prices have gotten even better since he switched to be more of a distributor. Go for it!

Thanks for the good work of making them fly. I'm a old F4 driver and I appreciated the guys ( and girls) that made it work

Well still searching my criteria remains, an accurate pistol with a good trigger, ambi safety ( I shoot left handed) and a hig vis front sight. Want the standard length Gov't model with the 5" barrel My once 20/15 eyes are now declining with macular degeneration and high vis front sights are a must. So
The contenders so far are
Les Bear Premier II or Super Tac.
Les Bear Thunder Ranch Special
STI USPA Single Stack
Kimber Super Match

Caliber is 45 ACP

Anyone have comments pro or con and what have I left out

Off to do some on sight research at my local dealer as STI missed another deadline on the two pistols I ordered in early March and promised by early May (one for me and one for my wife) great to have a hobby my wife enjoys also. You got to watch those Grandma's with guns. STI may, and does, build quality pistols but they do have a problem with scheduling ........ or maybe our order just does not have any priority. Starting to think answer "B" may be correct, hope I'm wrong.

Had a chance today to stop by my favorite gun store and play with the 1911's. the had a Kimber custom II that was very nice, a Les Bear used ( it would need a better front sight and an ambi safety, a very nice Springfield Arms match custom and several gov't model rail guns from different manufacturers. Then i fell in love as I handled a Nighthawk Talon II with a bobtailed grip. what a great example of fine custom work. The budget says the Kimber but the heart keeps looking at the Nighthawk. Some of you more knowledgeable folks chime in with comments. My wife reminds me that Father's day is not too far off.
