Friends...want to get an 870 in 20 gauge that will serve as the wife's HD shotty. She is 4'10" so you can tell I will need a smurffy stock! I was preferring a barrel that could use choke tubes in the event she did want to possibly use it to cross over into hunting. What version of the 870 would be a good palce to start and would allow upgrades over time? Thanks.

They make a 870 Compact Jr. Version 20 Gauge. The stock is shorter and the barrel is 21" and takes chokes so it could be a good hunting gun. Of course take her and let her handle it. It might still be to big. Has she fired a shotgun? Even a 20 might rattle someone that size pretty good.

You could get a collapsible stock like an AR but I would worry about it being to front heavy for her. You might be better getting an 18" 870 and then getting a shorter stock.

My 13 year old daughter can operate a Youth 11/87 20 gauge pretty well but she is probably 5' 4".

For home defense if you want a shotgun for her a side by side might be easier for her to wield. There overall length and weight might be better. A 18" barrel side by side vs 18" pump the side by side is at least 3" shorter.

Good Luck I hope you can figure it out for her.

I build two 20 ga tactical shotguns on the 870. You can give them a look then go to about any gun shop and get one very simular. One has the Knoxx SpecOps stock and the other the Remington stock that can be set from 12" LOP to 14".

As for upgrading. There are very limited things out there for a 20. Mesa is now making their shell holders for the 20ga 870 and it comes in 4rd, 6rd and even a right side 4rd. No one makes a tactical forend for the 870 20 gauge. Speedfeed told me two years ago they were coming out with one, well, not yet.

Looking at the 20ga tacticals I build on www.aiptactical.com (http://www.aiptactical.com) will give you and idea of which base weapon to go buy. You can get either of these weapons from any gun shop or have the guy order it. Might even find them on www.gunbroker.com (http://www.gunbroker.com) , Going to www.mesatactical.com (http://www.mesatactical.com) will show you the shell holders.

I got my 10yr old son a LNIB 870 Express 26'' rem-choke modified. Then a 18.5'' barrel, Knoxx stock, Mesa 4 shell holder, Wilson tube ex and a friend made a light mount on his end mill for it.

Just to add. The joy of the 870 is there are other barrels offered for it that have Rem Chokes. There is an 18.5 Vent rib with Rem choke, there is a 21" with Rem Choke and it is a vent rib barrel and would There are also 26" and 28" Vent rib barrels with Rem Choke. there is also a 20" fully rifled barrel. So coming up with a good hunting barrel is easy and changing them out only takes a couple minutes.

Get a youth model with the shorter wood stock. If it's wood, you can cut it even further if you need to. The 21" barrel is short, but you can cut that to 18.5 and remount the front sight if necessary. Accessories? Not that I know of.
