View Full Version : Which pistol, looking for comments
In my search for a new 1911 I have somewhat narrowed the playing field and am now looking at two pistols A Kimber Custom CDP with 5 inch barrel and on the "let's dream side" a Nighthawk Talon II with bobtail grip in the Commander size. The question for you experts ( ok just smarter than me) is the Nighthawk that much better in term of quality than the Kimber. I have another Kimber and have been happy with it and it shoots great... but the Nighthawk ..... I know it is an off shoot of thee Wilson. Kind of asked this question in another thread but I'm still looking for comments and or recommendations as the difference is just shy of $1500
Yes, they are that much better than even the best Kimbers. Here's my Nighthawk Enforcer and Kimber Super Match II.

I also own a Predator II bobtail, which is the same gun as the Talon II, but with the different barrel.

Great pistols. I wouldn't call them off shoots of Wilson. Obviously, some former Wilson smiths started Nighthawk, but they are their own company with their own style.

I don't own a Kimber or a Nighthawk, but if I had a choice it would be a Nighthawk hands down. Besides, why get a Kimber (practically all MIM, even the barrel ) when you can get a gun that sounds like a super hero.
No, but really, if you can swing the cash go Nighthawk.
Just a sugestion but I seen in your post you where looking at a bobtailed Nighthawk. If you decide to go the kimber route maybe try and get a Kimber super carry rather then the Nighthawk and still have enough money left over for the 5 inch CDP. Plus if you do that, you can give me a range report on the super carry as I have been thinking about getting one :embarassed:

For BAC 1023 Thanks for the pictures and that is the way I'm leaning ie the Nighthawk
For Rus 424 The super carry looks great. I have a Ultra CDP ii that i carry. Great pistol and good accuracy. Very comfortable to carry and shoot. Very controllable for a small three inch barrel gun. A story on the Ultra CDP II I had one that I was foolishly talked into trading away some 6 years ago. I have really missed shooting that little gun so when another one appeared I bought it. ... and will not let this one go. Enjoying this gun is why I am considering the full size Kimber CDP II but i keep looking at that Nighthawk .
As an aside I have shot the Commander length Kimber in 38 Super and that is a fine shooter also. As an old military guy the 1911 frame make up ie angle of the barrel to the grip fits me perfect. While i like the Glock also, a rugged simple pistol that always works that same angle is just enough different that I don't naturally point the glock.

I handled a Super Carry Pro yesterday. Its a fine 1911. I just wish to hell it was steel instead of aluminum.
I do like the fact that its a series I Kimber without the firing pin safety. If I ever do get another aluminum 1911, this will be it. :)
They aren't cheap though. :wow:

Thanks for the info BAC. I didn't realize it was a series 1 gun! I quess the only think stopping me from ordering one is that I got a CDP Pro at DVcustoms right now getting bobtailed and the super carry is essentailly the same gun. Plus I have yet to actually see one. What gun shop did you go to that had the super carry? You only live 15 mins from me so if you went to a local shop maybe I will drive to the shop and check it out.
FYI: I agree with you on prefering steel to alum frames but for my carry gun I want alum.

Why waste the money on a Nighthawk or even the CDP, when you can get a Taurus PT1911 that has all the features of a true custom 1911, but for only a fraction of the price?:dunno:You're not gonna find a matching serial number on the barrel and the frame of the Nighthawk or the CDP. That just shows the true craftsmanship that goes into a PT1911. Besides, everyone with half a brain knows that Kimber and Nighthawk are just fancy names with lots of advertising behind them.
You know I'm ****ing kidding!:tongueout:

Yeah, those are sweet.
Yeah, those are sweet.
Unfortunately, I don't buy 1911s with a small frames. :sigh:
Nighthawk is very accommodating though. I wonder if I could get them to buid one on a full size frame. After all, I ordered two from them already. :)
I think its basically a Talon II with a small frame and a different magwell. :dunno:

Agreed.
I upgraded from all my Kimbers to Nighthawk. Even my Kimber Warrior which was a favorite of mine. Nighthawk is my favorite 1911 builder, based mainly on looks. Thier workmanship is on par with any higher end 1911, but thier aesthetics really set them apart from other builders in my opinion.
To answer your question directly, yes I believe that thier workmanship is worth the price over the Kimber.
Agreed.

Yeah, Nighthawk does make some fine looking 1911s. :)
Many satisfied Kimber users. A friend haad some problems with his and could not get it resolved with multiple trips to the factory - wound up selling it. I have several 1911's in 45ACP, 40 S&W and 9mm. I believe youi should also explore the STI Trojan and Dan Wesson line of 1911's. I recently purchsed a DW PM-9 in 9m and it is superbly fitted and finished, undercut frame, chechered front strap, full ribbed barrel and excellent factory trigger with 1" groups at 50 ft for a bit over $1000 - a real bargain these days.
I know of a place with a DW Cbob for $1049. No Hokie, it's not your's :tongueout:

Hey Tony, I remember you from one of my threads not long ago.
You're the one with the Dan Wesson PM that can shoot with a 1.5" Les Baer SRP. :animlol:
Yeah, it was post #9 here:

When I send it to Chuck for the barrel crown, I'm going to have him mount one of these on the BOB so I can shoot .5" at 500 yards and your Baers will be jealous. It will henceforth be known as the LongBOB.

Well I bought the Nighthawk Talon II bobtail. Would have enjoyed shooting it tomorrow but I decided to leave it and have tha ambi safety put on and a Dawson hi vis front sight. Just a great feeling pistol that I'm sure will be a pleasure to shoot for many years. Thanks to all that commented and pushed me in the direction I wanted to go. My wife smiled and said "Happy Father's Day" Cool wife.

Can I listen in on a conference call?

Yeah, its weird that it isn't undercut. Those small frames can be hard to grip and undercutting would help.
