I'm looking at getting one of these 3. I'm a 1911 noob & you can probably tell what my price range is. I would prefer Commander length but am not ruling out gov't length. This will be a CCW gun. I like the skeleton hammer, beavertail safety, decent sights (not plain black), ambi safety not required.

I'm interested in the Rock Island Tactical (no Commander length available :fist:), Firestorm Commander, & Iver Johnson Polished Hawk models.

I would appreciate thoughts on these. Especially if you've owned or fired them. The good, bad & ugly.

Thanks guys!

I have all three and all three have been very good.

All three are also made in the Philippines, but by three different companies.

Rock Island is Armscor, Firestorm is Metro, and Iver Johnson is SAM.

Bac, can you post pics of the Firestorm commander model and the Iver Johnson? I must have missed those purchases in your recent frenzy

Knowing what you know, which one would you get for CCW if your budget only allowed one right now?

My friend was looking for a CCW 1911 on a budget. i told him either the RIA Tactical or the Citadel would be what he's looking for. He went with the Citadel. he had failures during the first 150rds, but he did not give it a thorough cleaning before hand. A day before a pistol class we were taking i look over and a fluff/buff. The next day he put 500rds through it during the class and had no failure's. The class was also in the rain in mud.

From looking at his Citadel (and others) sample, it seemed to be put together a little bit better (fitting) than the RIA that i owned or have looked at.

All three are good guns. You really cannot go wrong with any of them. As for a carry gun, I would take a serious look at the RIA Compact. I have the RIA Tactical, RIA Gov't, RIA Compact (Officer size), The Firestorm Gov't Deluxe, Iver Johnson Eagle, and Iver Johnson Hawk (Commander size).

I also have a nice High Standard Crusader Compact. Great little gun.

Well my RIA is the Government model, not the enhanced model, so that's out. However, I do own a Charles Daly EFS that's also an Armscor pistol and enhanced. They're now called Citadel.

I'd probably choose the Charles Daly first, only because I have the most rounds through it and its been great. My Firestorm and Iver Johnson have also been flawless, but each only have a box of ammo through them.

I will second the motion on the Charles Daly.

My RIA officer's size pistol.
It's pretty heavy for a carry piece at 2lbs 9oz loaded.

Actually, here's a pic of all my Filipino 1911s, though all are full size.

Left to right: Iver Johnson Eagle, Charles Daly EFS, Rock Island GI, STI Spartan, Firestorm DLX.

Anybody got any pics of the sights that come on the Daly, Firestorm & RIA? I can't do the plain black. Maybe 15 years ago, but not now.

The Firestorm has a nice three dot system with large white dots. The others are black, though I don't own an RIA Tactical.

if the RIA Tactical is like the Citadel, they they are no dot sight's

Yep. I believe those two and the Charles Daly are all pretty much the same gun. I handled a Citadel last week and it felt like the exact same gun as my CD.

sights are easy to swap out, so i wouldn't let that be a determining factor.

Yes, but the Eagle has target sights, so its a different animal. I'm not sure about the Iver Johnsons with combat sights.

:agree:

If you like the Firestorm, great, but you can put white dot sights on the others easily and cheaply.

My Hawk does not have the three-dot sights. The rear sight is like a plain notched Novak sight.

Would you guys recommend one of these as a first 1911? Or should I try to get a more $$ model? The only other way I could afford a more $$ model is to sell off one of my guns. Currently, the only one that would fit the bill is a Beretta 92FS. I never carry it, rarely shoot it. Otherwise my other guns are not up for consideration. What say you?

That Iver Johnson Hawk is a good looking gun. I just wish front strap checkering was more common. And even though I'm not a big fan of FCS's, they look nice on the Hawk. How much does a Hawk usually go for?

But at least it's already dove tailed for a sight upgrade.

The model I have is the Deluxe. It retails for $675.

Any recommendations if I were able to scrape up a couple hundred $$? Say, $700-900 price range? Kimber? Springfield?

I forgot about a guitar that I can get rid of.

Buy RIA (I believe that from this group only Armscor is certified as ISO 9001 company) and spend the rest of your money on the ammo.

For Commander length, what do you think about the Kimber Pro Carry II (with night sights, don't like the plain black). Any worries about not getting stainless for CCW? I prefer black.

Here you go my man. It's a 4", so not a commander length. This is a great deal on a nice pistola. No worries on stainless for CCW. It will actually show less wear. Get good leather.

Kimber Stainless Pro Carry 2 - $800

For what it's worth, RIA has an awesome warranty but I have to be honest and say I did have problems with my RIA Tactical when I first got it. After a trip to the RIA guys in NV, it has performed great.

Any blued finish will show some wear eventually. I would reccomend the stainless Kimber Pro Carry as Kimber's stainless finish is brushed and does not show scratches for wear nearly as easy as blued or high polished stainless finishes. JMHO

That told me a LOT, that you and Brian, with 100+ .45s of all price points between the two of you......BOTH carry a Kimber Pro.

That's why I got mine, granted...my CBOB will be my EDC when I get my permit.
