well first off hello to the 1911 section :)
- i recently bought a g19rtf2 but i did so without even considering my options. the only thing i debated on was 9mm or .40cal. anyways i have been looking at Kimber for quite a while now and while at the range last night i got to hold a ultra carry II and a Pro covert II. and im in love <3
the ultra is nice but ive read about a lot of issues with the 3'in models. but the PRO felt better anyways, its about the same size as the glock but actually feels lighter ( despite being heavier) but i assume its from the grip and being well balanced.
- overall ive got the 1911 bug bad and i want to buy one asap
- i love the pro carry II but would want CT grips and night sights. doing some homework on them now but any opinions would help.
Thanks!

Welcome, gotta change your screen name or you might have trouble :)

I think the Crimson Carry Pro is what you might want to look at in the Kimber lineup.

I think the Pro Carry would be a fine 1911 for your purpose and that you will not be sorry. Dont say we did not warn you about the siren call of the higher end 1911s though. Actually you should probably just do your self a favor and save a bit longer and get a Nighthawk Talon Bobtail Commander. Or Ed Brown Kobra carry like in Quack's picture.

- oh ya i noticed that no 1911 is cheap $$
- i want it to be all black with polished barrel , thats why i looked at the pro carry II

to put i fly in the ointment, i'm not sure how you feel about the Swartz/Series 80 safeties in the 1911, but most Kimber's have them. I had a Kimber Tactical Ultra with one and didn't have any problems though.

1 thing to remember. KEEP your Glock. I always see people trading a good, reliable carry gun for a little Kimber. Usually a bad move.

He wants a Pro, so he should be fine. :)

I carry a Kimber Pro CDP nearly every day. I've never had an issue with it.

If you're dead set on a laser (which I don't like), go with Kimber's Pro Crimson Carry II. Its got a lightweight frame as well.

You are done my brother. Start by saving every little penny, 'cause the 1911 aren't cheap, and trust me you can't stop on just one. And unless you willing to pawn one of your kidneys, DO NOT LOOK AT Bac's PHOTOGRAPHS!

Yes, buy a 1911, and welcome to the promised land.

Im not allowed to listen to you :tongueout: lol but ya i honestly would have no problem getting rid of the glock to go with a pro. the ultra seems really small and the issues are a no go. and the 5"in barrel on the standard ones is too big.
-and after thinking about it i dont NEED the laser, it may be cool but at the same time not so great. id be happy with the pro carry II with some night sights... i think thats what i want. would that be a good choice?
- another noob question. whats the deal with the ball ammo only? im reading mixed responses.. anyone give me the low down on that?

Not sure? A 1911 can be made to feed hollowpoint amoo just fine if it does not out of the box. Every Kimber I have owned (3) did not have a problem feeding hollowpoints anyway.

Also if you want a laser get it. It cant hurt by any means so long as you do learn not to rely only on the laser for aiming.

I carry a stainless Pro Carry II with Meprolight night sights. With the stainless, I do not worry about holster wear.

Generally speaking, JHPs feed great in an enhanced 1911. You hear that because original 1911 and 1911A1 spec is designed to shoot hardball ammo. Enhanced models have lowered and flared ejection ports, feed ramps, throats, etc to correct that.

i just read a few things that said that some 1911s dont take HPs. idk thats why i asked lol
and i like the laser but its expensive and i dont know how much use i would get. ive learned to shoot without one so why get one now?
edit: just googled kimber holster wear and i do NOT like that!

glockfan9

is that wear common among kimbers?

Cerebrus
06-13-2010, 21:07
I dont know what you have seen but my kimber has spent just about every day for the last 5 yrs in a holster.. yes there is some wear.. but is negligible. When I get home I can post up some pix for ya. As for the CT's mine came with the gun, I dont use em at the range.. but for pure intimidation purposes they are invaluable. In my experience the laser can de-escalate a situation with a quickness. Also in high stress situations fine motor skills are almost non existent, being able to place that dot on target while keeping both of his hands in sight is a good thing as well. I wish that I woulda had em on my '16 in my first tour of duty in Iraq.. woulda made for a little more peace of mind..
just my .02 cents..O and welcome to yer new addiction.. enjoy the Kimber:cool:

The sickness sets in quickly. I was a Glock guy....then a HK/Sig guy. Now I've got a $1,100 DanWesson with my name on it and I'm already scheming on how to put a $2,000+ Ed Brown in my hands. It's bad. It's very bad. :whistling:

Stainless will show less wear. Get good leather....and just realize that much like scars....holster wear builds character. And yes, certain chics dig holster wear too.

That led to "hon, that give's me 2 years to come up with the money for it." She asked the dreaded "and how much is this going to cost" question. When I blindly answered "a little over $2k" she simply walked out of the room. :nailbiting:

I know exactly what you mean. I have always been (and still am) a Glock guy. But the 1911 has got me in a bad way right now. I simply cannot get enough... What is happening to me with the 1911 is very similar to what happened to me with AR15's... and that could be very bad...
