I looked at some ballistics for the 115 Gr. +P and +P+ JHP, seems like most of these rounds penetrate up to 20 inch's. How does a round that penetrates 20 inch's, not over penetrate and go right through someone?

I have done some testing with some 9BPLE (115 gr +P+ Federal JHP) and some reg pressure 115 gr Gold Dots and I have never seen one penetrate more than 12-14". The Federal round completely destroyed a fresh block of gelatin, but all that was left was shrapnel and a nub. The Gold Dot 'fanned' out and looked like a saw and expanded to .937". But, jsut because I havent ever seen any load do 20 inches of penetration doesnt mean that it doesnt happen. Maybe a FMJ or a clogged JHP, but not a JHP that expanded.

115 gr Gold Dot: First was bare gel, 4-layers denim, 6-layers denim

115 +P+ Federal JHP: bare gelatin, 4-layers denim x2

is that using the Gold Dot bullet? I can understand a bonded bullet of some sort going 20 inches...

.937" Is that a typo?? That's insane. It's hard to get a .45 to expand that far. I'd have to question how much actual penetration a 9mm that expands to .937" will achieve.

How about a link or some data source? I have not seen such numbers. It's the reason many don't like the 115gr+P+, they tend to frag or over expand & penetrate less. This is old, but several of the 115gr laods are shown::dunno: http://demigodllc.com/~zak/firearms/fbi-pistol.php

I no longer have that info, but they were test in uncontrolled settings so you have to take it for what It's worth.

But after looking at the Corbon Self Defense 115 Gr. +P jhp (not the DPX, the classic), the velocity and foot lbs is close to their .357 sig line, the 90 Gr. +P is right there. That's got me interested in the 115 Gr. jhp.

Look at the picture that I posted, and no .937" is not a typo... That bullet is the size of a quarter, and yes, I said quarter . It didnt penetrate anywhere close to 20 inches, thats for sure, more along the lines of ~12". I have some Ranger T's in .45 that expanded to .950" and some in the +P flavor that have expanded to over an inch and an eighth. Of course, thats measuring over the 'talons' and not the exposed lead. I thought that one 9mm was an anomaly, but I had them consistently expand like that in the 115 grain flavor.

In my experience, the faster a JHP bullet moves, the less it tends to penetrate, and the more frequently it fragments, even in bonded bullets. Gold Dot jackets arent as thick as say, Winchester's PDX1's jacket or the Golden Saber jackets and have less of a tendency to fragment.
