After how many rounds through a pistol would you not be surprised to start having extraction issues that a new fitted extractor resolves?

Circa. 25,000 approx. in theory.

A quality extractor, properly tuned, should need only cleaning for a minimum of 10k rds.

Assuming your starting with a properly fitted/tuned and high quality extractor, it would disappoint me to need a new extractor at less than maybe 75k rounds. Note that doesn't mean the extractor isn't being cleaned with the rest of the pistol. This is a problem requiring replacement.

Some factory extractors are so soft they won't hold proper tension at all. Those I replace immediately.

I'm a big fan of Aftec extractors. They use solid steel (instead of spring steel) and have two tiny (but strong coil springs). The cost to replace the coil springs is negligable, and they come with a spare set. I have about 70K through one without issue and with the original coil springs.

Unfortunately, I don't think they make them for guns with firing pin safeties.

depends on the quality. les baer extractors often break around 15,000 rounds (check out the baer section of 1911forum), but wilson bp and brown hard core ones last much longer. you get what you pay for (baer extractors are cheaply priced)

Just my 2 cents but EGW makes the best.

For what an extractor does if you can shoot $5000-6000 worth of ammo I would say that's a pretty good $30 part.

true, unless you compare those figures to a wilson bullet proof, or brown hardcore extractor, which can go twice that round count.

Those things are stout for sure.

Agreed, even so the guy that posts 5K interval round counts with his TRS on 1911forum broke his extractor at 20K and he's put that thing through some abuse.

Yeah, EGW makes great stuff.

Its a shame they don't do full builds anymore. :sigh:

I have to agree with this. EGW makes fantastic extractors.

So you must know of a bunch of 1911s with either that have 30,000 rounds through then.

I'm just counting down to the end of my extractor life on my Baer..... the internetz told me so.

I would be more concerned with the initial fitting/tuning of the extractor versus the brand or company...the best money can buy extractor that was poorly fit may only last 5k rounds..while if it was properly fit and tuned it would of went 100k.

I really think this is a case by case basis..If my 1911 was my primary carry gun though i would set an interval of replacement for the extractor just to be on the safe side..and have an extra advantage in a world filled with disadvantages.
