View Full Version : S&W 1006; Why so popular??
I want one real bad, but it seems everyone else in the U.S. of A. wants one too. I can't seem to find one locally, and trying to win one on Gunbroker is just plain retarded! My last bid was over $700, and I still got outbid! The .40 cals are much cheaper. I wonder why S&W stopped making them. They seem to be real popular.
The S&W1006 is built like a tank, very reliable and accurate, other than being heavy what's not to like...I can hit 4" targets at 130 yards with mine stock adjustible sights.
Hang in there you should be able to get one for about $650. When I bought mine new in 1990 I paid $620 out the door. You want to see some expensive and rare pistols look for a S&W1046, they have gone for $3100 and $3300...OUCH!
Why did S&W stop making them? Contracts for the 10mm were dropped in favor of the NEW 40S&W pistols. Seeing how S&W isn't making them, I only take mine to the range now and daily carry with the G-29.
Shadow, thanks for the reply. I read somewhere that S&W only made 151 of the 1046s. Uber rare! Maybe someone should direct S&W to this forum and the popularity of the 10mm caliber therein. How many different generations of the 1006 were there, and what were changes made?
They are great 10MM pistols. As Shadow has already stated they are built like a tank, accurate and reliable.
They had the fixed sight and adjustable sight model of each of the 1006, there may have been some put together with the black trigger/hammers in later years.
Here is the line-up they produced...
1006- 5" barrel, slide mounted safety/decocker traditional double action
1026- 5" barrel, frame mounted decocker traditional double action
1046- 5" barrel double action only<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
1066- 4.25" barrel, slide mounted safety/decocker traditional double action
1076- 4.25" barrel, frame mounted decocker traditional double action
1086- 4.25" barrel double action only
Here is another look...
I hope this doesn't ofend someone!
Anyone here own an example of each?
At one time I think bambihunter had all of them, I think there might be a couple of others. I don't have the money to do that, I have the 1006 and the 1066 and would like to lay my hands on a 1086, I think I could be content with that.
