Anybody have one of the Guncrafters 1911's in .50GI, or the Glock top end conversion in this caliber? Any experience at all with this round?

From all the data I've found it's performance, velocity wise, is just a bit better than a .45 ACP with the same bullet weight. Where this round starts to shine is with the heavier bullet weights (.275 gr. and 300 gr.) that still fly out of the barrel at .45 ACP velocities.

What are your thoughts, both good and bad, about this round?

You get a lot more with the 1911/.460 Rowland, Wilson offers the .460 Rowland in their 1911 hunting model . . . if you want to spend the $$$s

I've always thought that it would make a helluva bedside gun.

Nothing against the 1911 platform(see my user name:supergrin:), but I was more interested in something I could slap on my model 20. I, also, looked into the Ace Customs .45 Super kit also, but alas it's only available for the model 21 and truthfully I'm not convinced it really offers anything that the 10mm doesn't.

Personally I'm suprised that the .50GI isn't more popular with the big bore fans as a carry caliber.

I actually have a Guncrafter .45 on order and If I really like it I might get a .50GI.

i thought about getting a conversion, then i shot my G20 again with real 10mm ammo and realized that there was no need for anything else, except a fence to put around the crater it made in the ground. God i hope it rains soon and fills it up so i have a pool to cool off in.

Agreed...I actually just received a G20/21 top end kit (in Melonite) yesterday from Alex with a couple boxes of ammo. I am a dealer for Guncrafter, but have never done anything with the .50 GI stuff. One thing I can say is the bullet is pretty damn big!! The pistol shoots suprisingly soft....much more so than a 10mm. Probably more along the lines of a .45. The JHP rounds, if they expand like below in a body , are flat out nasty...It is a pretty pricey setup, but it functioned flawlessly and if it continues to do so, I will probably keep it in my nightstand. It is certainly a niche pistol.....but a pretty cool niche pistol, at that...I did some very unscientific water testing yesterday with various .45 rounds to compare with the .50 GI. If real life expansion (in a BG) is similar to this, I damn sure wouldn't want to be hit with any of the below rounds. All rounds shot through a beater G21SF that I had in my truck. The compared rounds were Winchester Ranger 230g RA45T, 230g Gold Dot and 160g Barnes +P.

Damn! You weren't kidding Dave. That's impressive. I may have to get one of those for my G20. Is the Melonite finish any more or less than the stainless slides I've been seeing? I like the Melonite look alot better than the bi-tone look. BTW, who did you grip reduction? I've been debating between Robar and Cold Bore. And how much better do you like the way it feels over the original?

Any idea what one can expect for penetration with these rounds?

I was just at Guncrafters shop today and was told by Alex that they 230g JHP .50 rounds penetrate 11 inches and the 185g JHP penetrate a little less.
