I have a hard time "buying", that I can get a Les Baer 1.5" for $1600-$1800.:dunno: Am I missing something somewhere? Maybe I'm passing by the cheap ass 1911, bad ass gun store? :dunno:

The 1.5" guarantee alone is a $295 option.

I was LUCKY and found my TRS used for a little less than $1400. I'd be smoking crack to think it's commonplace IMO.

I have never found a Baer that wouldn't shoot better than 99% of the people using them. His guns are virtually identical. Buy whatever fits your needs and is cheapest. Better yet, buy used so you can get one that is loosened up some.

Give John at Proload a call and he will tell you the 1.5" guns are a waste of money. He has very good prices on Baers but I think even the PII with 1.5 is going to a little more than $1800.

Well yeah, the 1.5" option certainly isn't necessary to have a great shooting Baer.

What?!! What?!! You mean you can't shoot 1.5 groups at 25+ yards?

Pffftttt.....

I just think its amazing that a 5" handgun is capable of that kind of accuracy from a ransom.

I'm sure as hell not. :embarassed:

Yeah I think you can find them used in that price range. For some reason Baer don't hold their value very good in the used market. They are good gun for sure and you can normally find them at a very good price in the used market.

While John at Proload is a nice guy to converse with, I would not say his prices are "the best." Shop around and you'll find better pricing. (I speak through experience)The other big distributor, Davidsons, has a lifetime guarantee where if something goes wrong with your gun, they will replace it free. This is just for comparisons sake as far as how you will be treated after the fact.

I'm not really sure where this notion came from, but its the second time its been posted in this thread. :dunno:

I honestly have never seen anything to lead me to believe that Baers lose their value at a faster rate than any other semi custom.

Many times Baers sell new lower, so that may have something to do with it. Baer is the only semi custom builder out of the big four or five to have models under $2K. However, they don't lose value any quicker or any more severely than the other 1911s in their class.

Actually they hold their value just fine compared to the other semi-customs.

No doubt, Jeff.

I'm not sure where that idea came from, but it was posted twice in this thread and its the first two times I ever heard it. If anything, Baers hold their value better than some of the others.

Well, maybe I can wait awhile and find one that's got no FCS and been hardchromed and is about 10 years old or so. I should be able to pick it up for around $250, since they keep falling in value.

But then you will want to actually shoot bullets with it and not use it just as paper weight. I think that a used $1800 bear with 1.5" is a good buy and any used bear $1600-$1700 is a great deal.

I agree 100% with you. Actually my experience is seen used Les Baers going for $100 - $150 below street price, which is an awesome deal. If you can get a LB with 5000 or less for that price grab it fast. Another thing I noticed is that LB is becoming very popular, I am waiting on one and was told 12-16 weeks wait and I am going to week 17 now, talked to Les Baer and he said he is swamped with orders. All the regular gundealers I know, except crazy John from proload, are out of stock and when they get they are selling them like water in a hot summer day. Even John I called him twice, one time for my
Concept VIII and he was out of stock, and another for a TRS, which I am glad he didn't have at the time or I would be up to three LBCs by now.

Gunbroker always has a selection of Baers to choose from. :)

Yes, but you need to be lucky to find one at a decent price. I find, not always but most of the time, gunbroker prices on NIB guns are way overpriced.

Not really.

I've gotten great deals on both new and used guns on GB. Plus, if its an out of state purchase, there is no sales tax.

I've bought over thirty handguns on Gunbroker over the years and did better than I could locally at least 75% of the time.

I believe you. But that is not the case now. Can you give me a link as of now, 06/27/2010, of one good deal from GB on a Les Baer?

All three of these are priced lower than what I can do from my local shop. Shipping is also less than than PA tax on a gun of this price.

I did see these as I look on GB pretty much daily for LBs. But I don't consider these to be good deals. A couple of weeks ago John Proload was selling TRS for $1699 + shipping = $1750 delivered. The TRS you link is starting at $1790 + $35 shipping. I cannot compare the price on the other two because I never looked into them. My experiences with gunbroker have not been as lucky as yours, I have never, ever found a deal on gunbroker on a new gun that I could not find better elsewhere. Used guns is a different story, once in a while I see good deals there. Most of my guns I buy either from smaller shops or budsgunshop and 100% of the time I have done better than on gunbroker.

Well, the 1699 price is more than a couple of weeks old with the next foreseeable sale date possibly around Christmas according to John. There is no way to figure out when John will hold a sale and what will be on sale. About 3 weeks ago a NIB TRS went for 1600 even with 25.00 shipping on Gunbroker. You have to be patient, wait, and constantly research.

Correct, it was end of May. I am not positive but I believe they are now $1850 delivered next day no credit card fees.

The point I was trying to make, before we got into this tangent, was that Les Baers are selling alot. And as we can see from your links, the ones who have them are asking close to msrp. Which lots of people end up paying. The wait for a Les Baer is 16 weeks if you order one from a shop. The resale value of these guns, for what I have seen on gunbroker and other gun sites is very good.

I am not 100% sure but I believe talking to Les Baer himself that he makes 170-180 guns a month (cannot remember the exact number but it was something like 17x)

p.s. Did you notice I am a LBC fan?

As you can see, its the blue/nickel version. Its a great shooter. The only thing I don't care for is that they're series 80.

It remains my best GB deal to this day. That being said, I really use GB to get all the rare guns I desire more than just trying to get a great deal.

If it weren't for using GB, I wouldn't have half the stuff I have in my collection today. :wavey:

Wow! I want to live in your state. I am going to guess...PA or AZ maybe? Those two seem to have fantastic local shops from all the threads I've engaged in regarding local shop prices.

Here in the state of Taxas(Houston specifically), I am lucky to drive 30 miles and find the rifle I'm shopping for at $100 less than MSRP. I always save well over $150 per purchase even after shipping, FFL fees, gas, food during the journey etc., etc.

I have recently found 2 local pawn shops through Davidson's Gun Genie that seems to offer very fair deals though...assuming the purchase is under $500 only. Gun shows are no different, they are(or used to be) for ammo only in my case.

Gunbroker has saved me thousands of dollars over the last 10 years. The trick is to watch and be patient. If you must have it now or this week, then perhaps not. If you are willing to watch for several weeks daily, you will find the good deals.

I think I paid 1900 with tax for my 1.5 premier 2 a couple of years ago from Davidison Gallery of Guns. I have seen standard 3" guarantees for a little over 1600 tax not included.

Any of the designer custom guns will be better than a run of the mill, mass produced gun.

Yet it must be mentioned that a 1.5 group is possible with many guns but not many shooters. I own a few custom guns and they are great but I am not as good of a marksman as the guns allow.

The question now becomes is having a gun that may shoot such a tight group worth the extra money for your shooting style and needs.

The best shooting gun I have a S&W 1911 Pro and it shoots better than I do even though I go through hundreds of rounds per month. While I carry professionally, I am certain if I shoot in SD, the perp is not going to be concerned that I shot a 3 inch group as opposed to one half that size. And I am not going to be aiming as accurately at the perp as I would be a target that is not about to shoot back at me. I will be looking at speed and more of a point shot than a tight group.

JMHO

In a SD situation, with adrenaline pumping, sweaty hands, nerves, etc....I would be happy with a 6" group. That should be sufficient to take care of business. :whistling:
