View Full Version : Ammo for Spike's Tactical conversion
I borrowed my friend's brand new Spike's Tactical 22LR conversion kit to try out in my Stag AR-15. What 22 LR ammo can I count on to give the best reliability and accuracy with this bolt conversion?
I believe Spike's does recommend Federal. However, I wouldn't expect superb accuracy from a 1X9 barrel.
I have gotten by far the best reliability from my Spike's kit with Federal's "Lightning" ammo (costs $1.47/50 at WalMart).
Works fine in my ST-22 rifle
I've got one of their dedicated uppers on order with the Lothar Walther barrel upgrade. It'll be great if it eats the cheap stuff so long as it also eats the good stuff. Anyone have suggestions on match ammo for the dedicated uppers?
They recommend Federal Bulk pack from Wal-Mart(as that's what they test their uppers with) and also suggest running plated ammo. I have a brick of the Federal Lightning which I may test to see how it shoots.
The Federal is the old recommendation but they have found it's been going downhill. If you look at the ST-22 ammo thread over on AR15.com (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=282&t=163993&page=2), they also suggest Agulia 38g High Velocity. (Scroll about half way down the thread). I can't say how well it works but I just ordered 5000 rounds to give it a try. I can't say I'd do that to play with a borrowed upper though, especially if the Federal was available locally.
I have ran my ST-22 for for a few thousand rounds of Federal Bulk without tuning and I think I've had 3 issues total so no complaints here. Just glad I stocked up on a few thousand rounds before prices jumped.
Spikes also recommends CCI mini mags. I have had very good results with them. I have run through three mags in a row before a malfunction. It's for plinking, so an occasional jam is to be expected, especially with .22 semi-auto actions.
The conversion in my rifle worked great with Winchester Xpert hollow points, but the indoor range where I sometimes shoot says only plated ammo. Now I'm going looking for Federal Champion.
If you're a good shot, don't expect it to be more accurate than you are. 1+ inch groups at 25 yards are common with bulk.
I ran Aguila Interceptors through my Spike's upper, they shot really well.
Federal bulk pack worked okay, but I liked the Aguila more.
