Well, my big green case came in today, after much anticipation.

I was debating on whether to pick up this first or the EMF Hartford that I also have at my shop. Obviously, I chose the Remington. I'll pick up the EMF over the next couple of months.

I just got it home, so I haven't shot it yet, but its an impressive 1911. Slide to frame fit is fairly tight overall for a 1911 of this price, with minimal movement. The black finish is even and very nicely done, as seen in the pics. The grip safety feels a bit on the light side. Its not a problem, but I prefer them to be a bit heavier. The sights are large and easy to use. The trigger seems crisp and I love short aluminum triggers. The wood grips themselves are handsome and set the gun off well. Overall, I find the Remington to be a very good looking 1911. The rollmarks are slightly larger then I prefer, but certainly not obnoxious by any means.

The fact that there is an all American 1911 on the market that's nicely done under a big name for $600 is great news. Like I said, I haven't shot it yet, but range reports seem to be going very well so far. The only thing that puzzles me is why Remington felt the need to go series 80 for something like this. Its certainly not a deal breaker, but I would much prefer a series 70.

Here are some pics.

Please let me know what you think.

I really do honestly like the looks of it. The one I handled was very well built and I was pretty close to buying it.

My hang up is the cast frame....maybe it's not a big deal...but it does bother me. In the same price range you can get something from Springer that has a steel frame...so for me it's kinda a no brainer which I would go with given the choice. In many circumstance though, the cast frame really probably isn't an issue...it's probably me just being nitpicky.

Bac, can you confirm something I read though about the Remington? Apparently the user manual says not to fire +P ammo out of it...could you let us know if that's the case?

Good looking 1911 overall though! Congrats!

same as Kimber saying to use SAAMI spec ammo.

Can I fire Plus +P ammo in my 1911 R1?
The 1911 R1 is designed for use with industry standard SAAMI spec ammunition. It is not designed for use with +P ammo nor is it recommended that this ammo be used in your firearm.

James, two came in today and one more will be in tomorrow. The other one that came in today is in the case, but one of the grips has a couple small chips in it. It looks like it got banged around a bit at some point either during shipping or before it left the factory. Remington is sending a new set of grips.

Yours will be the one that comes in tomorrow. If it wasn't for the damaged grip, yours would have been the other one that came in today.

Yes, it does state that, though it looks like a generic warning label they may use on all their firearms. :dunno:

WARNING! The specific ammunition cartridge suitable for use in your firearm is marked on the barrel. Different cartridge types and calibers are not interchangeable. Do not use any ammunition other than the designated cartridge specified for your handgun. Do not use ammunition marked with Plus P, "+P" or any other high velocity or pressure ammunition.

Either way, it doesn't bother me in the least. I don't even use +P in my carry 1911.

I have no business buying another 1911 right now, I just got my 1918 grips on the Champion and got the extractor dialed in.

That is the first new gun that I have seen where I cannot find a single feature that I dislike. Nice polish, solid trigger, straight serrations, decent sights, nice looking grips.

Even the markings are not as big when Bac is behind the camera.

Yeah, other than the big crooked "R" on the right side, I actually don't mind the rollmarks at all.

I have yet to see one person but the R1 seems like a great peice for the money.

On a side note, I know that series 80 means it has a firing pin safety but are are the disadvantages compared to the series 70? It seems as if nobody prefers the series 80.

Honestly Trey, its just an extra piece of garbage in the gun that isn't needed.

Some people say its changes the feel of the trigger, though I never found this to be the case. I do know it can get in the way during reassembly. Several manufacturers use the series 80 safety, to include Sig and S&W. Kimber has their own goofy firing pin safety.

When it comes to Colts, series 70 guns are much more desirable and generally more valuable.

Its a cool gun. Like the Remington, its also built in the USA.

The finish has a worn look to it, which was purposely made to look that way.

I expect the ATI FX 45 MILITARY 1911 and the Desert Eagle 1911G to arrive today. BTW, the deal on the Kimber Classic Custom II worked out, so I will be receiving it next week along with the Remington. If Fred gets the Remington shipped today, it could be in as early as Saturday. Next on the list, the EMF Hartford 1911.

I did tell Fred that you wanted an EMF and he said he could have it in a couple days after you give the word. :)

The EMF and the Morris Custom are likely my last two 1911 purchases of 2010, so that will give you ample time to pass me.

I thought about a new Cimarron that just came out, but I know now its Armscor. I'm not sure I want another Armscor 1911, as I have a few already. I'd rather have variety and pick up something else.

Well, they would pretty much have to introduce a full size enhanced model first and then introduce that in a shorter barrel. They aren't going to build a mil spec commander.

I believe the next 1911 Remington introduces will be a stainless version of what I just bought.

DAAyum. Didn't anybody over there at Remington think the proposed rollmarks a little big?

Cursive "R"1?? Yuck.

I'd need to find a 'smith to shave the rollmarks off. But at $600, the rest of the gun looks like a steal. If only it didn't need another $200 - 300 to clean up the rollmarks and refinish the gun. I won't by a 1911 w/ front cocking serrations; the Remington rollmarks would exclude me, too.

There was a time when the 80's were regarded as the bane of all '11s. In the early days when the 80 first came out, gunsmiths had a harder time mating parts for a sweet trigger. Early trigger modifications just weren't the equal of a 70's '11. Once the gunsmithing community got used to the different configuration, an 80 was no different from a 70, but that never changed the 80's appeal in the public eye--most folks prefer the 70 for its' rollmark and simpler mechanics.

No doubt James.

I keep myself to five or so guns per range trip. One is always a rimfire and another is usually a revolver, leaving just three centerfire autos. They aren't all 1911s either. I usually end up taking two 1911s with me.
