View Full Version : can a stainless slide be (reliably) refinished?
I asked springfield about making the emp slide black to match the frame, they said nothing would have good adhesion to the slide. True?
Also, could the frame be made to look like the slide, via bead-blasting or something simliar? Not digging this particular two-tone, love the gun though!
:dunno:
Dan Wesson uses a black finish on their Valor. Its a stainless 1911 as far as I know.

Man, that Valor is AWESOME.
Doesn't the Gen III coating from Ed Brown go over a stainless frame and slide?

Thanks man.
I haven't shot it since I did a comparison range report I did between it and my Sprngfield TRP.

That was over two years ago. Honestly, I'm not even sure I've shot my TRP since then either. :dunno:
Sad, but true. I have too many, I guess. :embarassed:

I will PM you my address. Send it here and I will make sure it gets plenty of attention.
I was recently emailing Deb from the Springfield custom shop about some work. She told me that the frame could be done in ceramic coat to make it silver and there would be no problems with putting Black T on the slide. Not sure why they couldn't Armory Kote the slide as well..

I'm not sure.
Maybe Armory Kote doesn't adhere to stainless well.
Black T is far better anyway.

I agree. Revel, just keep in mind if you go with Black T, it will add to the turn around time. I won't say what I was quoted.. :whistling:
Now if you are just planning on getting your EMP refinished.. Robar is always an option.. You could do a NP3 Plus and Roguard finish to get your two tone look...

Yup, all stainless steel. Forged stainless to boot. :)

That's BS, lots of coatings will work on the slide.
On your frame question it depends on whether you have the 9mm or .40. The .40 is a Stainless frame and the 9mm is a alum alloy. You are somewhat limited as to what you can do with the alum frame.
I'm not sure.

I believe that the black parts of the Black Stainless Loaded's are AK

the EMP .40 frame is carbon steel with AK
the 9mm frame is anodized alloy
my Kobra Carry is GenIII coated SS.

Cobra, that may be the sexiest Valor ever.
Funny thing is that via the Springfield website the EMP .40 frame is stainless steel "black hardcoat anodized."

Yeah maybe, but I really like bobtailed 1911s, so it just worked out that way. :)

As you know, Keith's comments and the the timing certainly indicates that it was.

I was just sayin that I think it's funny taking into consideration what they told him.
Guys I'm dyslexic or something, sorry. I want the slide to be black like the frame is, typed the wrpng question initially, I have the 9mm

All of the P229s have stainless slides. The newer P226s and P220s have stainless slides.

IonBond
It's really not a black-or-white thing. Many finishes adhere better to carbon steel guns. I have a stainless XD that I sent back to the Custom Shop; one of the things I had done was a Black-T finish on the whole thing. It doesn't stick as well to the stainless, but it's better than nothing.
If you're starting from scratch, most finishes work better on carbon steel. :)

Fusion's Ion Bond sticks to stainless. I had the IB a stainless Ruger bolt, and it came back beautiful. Kinda looks blued, but so far more durable.

An alternative is Superblack. It's a chemical process, not a coating.

Thanks Hokie. Aside from my 1911s, it's my favorite pistol. The custom trigger work I had done puts SA almost on par with a 1911.
Getting rid of the dopey tac rail makes it a true Sig "classic;" something that the clowns in Exeter should figure out someday.

It's a little known fact that Cobra was indeed planning on blinging out his 226. Sadly, he changed his mind last minute.

Keith also declined to set up his Valor like this for him.
