I can't find any posting so I think I may have asked this elsewhere.

Anyway, is there anyone here who has used Novak to build their 1911? They did an excellent job on my BHP, which is the pistol I hear the most praise for their work. I am positive they build 1911's to the same level, but I just don't see their work come up too often.

I know they cost a bit more than a semi-custom when the base pistol is figured in, but despite that their prices aren't too bad in the custom level. I was thinking about a SA Custom but lately their lack of communication is making me think otherwise.

Not that is matters, but I have been eyeballing

A. http://www.novaksights.com/1911.htm#Classic_Custom
B. http://www.novaksights.com/1911.htm#Original%E2%80%9D_Novak%C2%A0_FBI_

I'd have to find the right basegun, most likely a Colt...just cause I don't have one. I would make a few minor changes to either package, but for the most part either one would suit me perfectly.

Thoughts? Novak vs SA Custom?

I have two pistols built on the second package, the FBI spec. First is a Kimber Custom Classic and the second is a Kimber Compact Stainless. Both were built at Novak's in the year 2000 and they have been my daily carry pistols for the last ten years. The five inch for fall/winter and the compact for spring/summer.

I modified the package for both as follows; bar-dot tritium setup, single side safety
no mag funnel, no front strap checkering and no magazines.

They are my most prized / carried pistols in my collection.

I believe you will be very satisfied if you choose Novak's to build your pistol.

Good luck with your project.

Novak's prices are about middle of the pack when it comes to custom 1911 packages. I don't own one, but from everything I've read and seen, they do top notch work. I feel its a step up from a any of the semi custom builders.

Colts are the only base guns I really like to use. When it comes to custom guns, I either have scratch builds or those built on Colt bases.

Sweet, do you have an pics by chance? I too would make a few changes if I take this route. I am leaning toward the FBI package.

I honestly don't have a preference, I just want something if I do this. You did give me an idea, I think a Caspian frame, like the Enforcer, would make for a sweet Novak build. I'll have to call them and see.

I do like the SA since they offer a few options Novak doesn't, but the Novak is different than the SA Custom I have on order.

I'm not sure whether they will use a Caspian frame or not. :dunno:

I sent them an email to find out. They do have pictures of past Caspian builds, but I'll find out if they'll still use Caspian parts.

Photography is not so great but you will get an idea of what it looks like. By the way the finish is Black T.

Both pistols are pre Series II. I don't like the firing pin safeties. Top photo is how it looks now with the CT grips. Pics 2 and 3 were taken when it was received back from Novak's and the final bling shot was a couple of years later as you can tell by the darkening of the left stock from exposure to perspiration during carry.

I always like seeing a pistol getting used.

So, how is their build "philosophy" Do their make the barrel bushing so tight you need a wrench or do they make it hand tight? Very tight barrel lock-up?

Any small details like this would be appreciated. I'm leaning toward the Novak FBI package over the SA now, and just wonder what to expect for the overall feel.

Also, did they round the butt just a bit or is it just the photos?

Didn't round the butt, just blended it well.

The bushing was wrench tight at first, but with a couple of hundred rounds you could turn it by hand (I've got strong fingers). Barrels are tight and accurate, and the whole gun has a nice soft feel. Not a sharp edge to be found on them.

Best feel I could give you is that at ten years of carry they both shoot and feel as good as the day I took delivery. Each one has about 2 to 3 thousand rounds through them. I shoot them much less than my beater guns. They are trusted carry guns.

I have not owned an SA custom shop build but I couldn't imagine being any happier than I am with my Novak pistols.

Well, I'm going to find out soon...unless my bad luck strikes again with another surgery. They told me about 8 months, which is better than I expected.

I'm pretty much sold on the FBI package, it is different from my other 1911's. I know FCS's are shunned but I'm going to get them anyway. Now I just need to order a Caspian frame/slide and enjoy the wait.

Thanks for your input :wavey:

I have had several of my 1911 worked on or rebuilt/customized by Novaks. I found their workmanship second to none. AAA+++

It takes some time (DOD requests always go to the front of the line), but Novaks kept me "in the loop" on where my firearm was and called several times to ask questions and offer different alternatives as they built it.

Take a look at what they accomplished with my Colt Defender:

Yup it is. Plus it shoots a 1.5 inch group at 15 feet.

Meh, that's nothing. Bac's Valor can shoot .25" groups at 1,000 yards.

...or was it your Fusion. I can't remember.

I know Brian isn't one to brag about his marksmanship skills.....but word on the street is that with his Hi-Point, he can shoot the wings off a fly at 500 yards. :whistling:

Well, I haven't worked out the details yet but I am going to have another pistol by Novak's soon. They did excellent work on my BHP so I expect the same for a 1911.

The whole SA Custom vs Novak has taken an interesting turn too. Rather than pick between them I have found a way to get both. Some much for abiding to a budget.

Silver slide, black frame... Definitely my favorite. Beautiful gun.
