View Full Version : What is a 1911 snob?

I've heard a couple of times mentioned, but am wondering why is someone considered snob just because they refuse to buy a 1911 with MIM parts, FPB, or they think that certain 1911s are just better than others.

I dont consider the things you listed to be a 1911 snob. Personally i dont consider someone with 20 custom 1911's a snob. They just have the funds and know what they like. A snob is defined by there personality being cocky or thinking there opinion is absolute fact. An example would be, someone saying that a 1911 was a much superior design and model to say the glock platform and that glocks are junk compared to Wilson. That is a personal opinion not fact, and when someone tries to pass it off as fact they then become a 1911 snob

I know you are kidding, I actually thought of Bac as being one who is very neutral since he owns 1911s from the whole spectrum - cheapest in price to the exotics. It appears to me that is some sort of self justification (when not kidding) when one refer to others as snob.

I agree. You personal preferences do not make you a snob. I think that having a superiority complex about your preferences make you a snob.

This is an easy one. A 1911 snob is someone who does not recognize the greatness of John Browning's best pistol design. The BHP.

No muss, no fuss. A great shooter out of the box without a multitude of upgrades to get the damn thing to work properly.:tongueout:

Go ahead and flame me now. You know I have not spoken with forked tongue.:wavey:

Well, we true aristocratic elitest afficianados of the truely fine 1911, must look down our nose at the slack jawed troglidytes who insist on purchasing inferior "guns". If, for some reason, my good man, the "Eddie punch clocks" and "Joe six packs" out there, insist on calling us "snobs", then so be it. Now, I must be off, as my Rolls Royce awaits me on my trip to the gun range. Onward Geeves. To the gun gun range.

Browning actually didn't have much to do with the Hi-Power since he died 9 years before it was finalized. Many people believe that he "corrected" the flaws in the 1911 with the P-35...and one of the most apparent changes is the lack of a grip safety. The grip safety is absent on the pistol because the people who were paying the bills didn't specify one. If they had, you can bet the farm that the Hi-Power would be wearing one today.

I think we have drifted away from the original question.
I... was a 1911 snob at one time.
I believed that the 1911 was THE only gun worth having and carrying for S.D.
I believed that the 1911 was the finest designed firearm of all time and nothing else needed to be made or continued to be made. Scrap them all and melt em into 1911's.
I refused to even look at or consider another handgun over the beloved 1911.
Now, when I grew up and got into firearms the 1911 was the gun to judge all others by.
Nothing in my opinion, and many other's opinions comparred in quality or function.
It is only in the last two or three years that I have learned to appreciate the Glock design.
I carry a 21SF now even though I still love my 1911's.
I was a 1911 snob. I am not anymore.
Damn... feel like I just went through AA for guns.

The 1911 was the design given by God to us through John Moses Browning that represents the epitome of what a killing tool needs to be. It was true in 1911 and is true now.

Every day I face Ogden, Utah, and pray that God might bless John Moses Browning.

You may want to look at the Springfield Mil-spec. It differs from the GI in that it has a lowered and flared ejection port, a extended ejector and better sights. It does not cost much more that the GI.

It helps with reliability when it comes to ejecting cases.

A throated barrel/polished feed ramp helps the feeding of hollow point ammo.

Someone who thinks the 1911 is superior to any other handgun platform for reasons other than personal experience.

The 1911 is without a doubt the greatest combat handgun of all time, no question in my mind. With that said, today’s factory mfrs. are producing many sub-par guns for what you’re paying. Sending a gun back to the factory 3 times isn’t “just part of it” or even bad luck IMO. The 1911 needs to be built with care for maximum reliability and many companies aren’t doing it. I’m not going to pay $700-900 for a handgun that doesn’t run out of the box. It’s ridiculous. “Run it wet and feed it hardball” aren’t characteristics/requirements I’m looking for a defensive firearm.

A 1911 snob, by my definition, is someone who won't buy a certain gun because it's not the way that John Moses Browning originally designed it. If JMB were still alive, who knows what he would have designed or modified by now.

I disagree! Not buying a 1911 because of certain design choices made by the manufacturer is purely a matter of preferences. I personally don't buy, mostly because I am not a collector, 1911s with any type of fpb or external extractors (unless it is a deal $$$). I don't think it is a matter on how one spends their hard earned money but, as many said on this thread, it is a matter of how one behaves thinking he/she is better, knows more, and anybody else's opinion are invalid.

.... until you hit the AR forums.

Seriously. Some poor guy buys a decent, mid-level AR, announces it on the AR forum of his choice, and gets trashed by the "elites".

The 1911 crowd doesn't come close to the attitudes from the AR snob. Some guy buys a Rock Island, and most everyone says, "Great pistol for the money." And means it.

Buy the gun you can afford, shoot it often, and enjoy. If that's a Les Baer or an Ed Brown, good on ya'.

I've heard a couple of times mentioned, but am wondering why is someone considered snob just because they refuse to buy a 1911 with MIM parts, FPB, or they think that certain 1911s are just better than others.

A 1911 snob is someone who would badmouth brands of 1911s on issues other than operation and functionality.

Not really FLIPPER. I know where you're trying to go with this, so leave it alone.

There is more to a 1911 than just reliable functioning. You can get one for under $500 that functions beautifully, has a decent finish, and solid build quality or you can spend more than that for another 1911 that offers little to none of that on a consistent basis from gun to gun.

You my friend are my Hero, I now know that you truly own the best as well as the worst firearms made :cool::cool:

Snobbery can really discourage new gun buyers. That slows the groth of the firearms world. Bad karma for them. There are definatly snobs of all kinds. I have dabbled in Glock snobbery in the past, but only because its the only gun Ive had multiple examples of without one single little problem.

For me the Taurus was a POS. I don't trash the brand. I own several Taurus models that I like. My opinion is that the PT1911 is the worst 1911 on the market. That's my opinion and it will stay that way. Does that make me a snob?

I don't like the PT1911 and never will. That's based on personal experience and my opinion of its build quality. I'm not looking down on Taurus, I'm looking objectively at this model in particular. I think its overpriced and offers less value and certainly less quality than its Filipino competition.

If some don't share my opinion, fine. I know plenty of people got good PTs.
