Looking to add a new family member to the household and I really like, like, like the 1911 look, but not so much the price on the models I've looked at in the shops around here. As much as I would love to drop a grand or more on this weapon, I couldn't if I wanted to right now. Wanted the advice from the experts on the best 1911 in the $800 or less range. I've seen them for much cheaper, but cannot tell the difference from one to another.

I'd love to have a .45 for minor range shooting, but I'll still have my Glock do most of the dirty work. Any advice, tips, etc. will be greatly appreciated!

The metro arms american classic is awesome & it's $450. After another trip to the range today & shooting it head to head with my loaded springfeld loaded, i think it shoots better. Smoother action, lighter trigger, & half the price. Awesome shooter, check it out.

I wouldn't doubt it. I've never been impressed with the Loaded at all.

Hey Brian, I know STI makes a great gun, but that finish looks like poo compared to the other 3. Better/same/worse in person?

As much as I like the all black look, the dark wood grain on the Desert Eagle is...:faint: Thanks for the advice, I'll look for the American Classic locally and see what I can find and look for the Desert Eagle right after.

The Spartan has a parkerized finish. It not built by STI. Its built in the Philippines on an Armscor frame and slide with STI small parts.

Its a great shooter.

I do need to take better pics of it though.

Just so you know, the Firestorm DLX is the same gun as the American Classic. They're built by Metro in the Philippines.

Also, don't forget about Iver Johnson either. ;)

Yeah, they're all mine and I forgot to mention the Thompson Custom.

They run about $650-$700 and are nicely enhanced 1911s for range use.

1911s? What are you up to now? 58? He's got a few disgustingly tasty customs on the way that should put him over 60 if he's not already. Yeah, and ummmmmm, that's just his 1911s. :whistling:

Would anyone recommend the new Remington to Clint-M? From my very limited handling of one at my LGS, it seemed really nice and it came in under Clint's $800 price limit.

Here's a list of candidates I like. The Spartan and the TLE are IMO the best out of these choices but they're all pretty good guns especially just for range use.

Rock Island Tactical $450.00

STI Spartan $650.00

Kimber Custom II $700.00

Kimber TLE II $800.00 (Front checkering with night sights)

Colt 1991 Government 45 5" $780.00

Smith & Wesson SW1911 .45acp 5" $830.00

i would highly recommend the Spartan. The finish is weak, but at that price you can shoot it for awhile and when the finish wears off just have it redone and you wont be crying cause you spent 1k on a 1911. They are way worth the money

Well, he said he wanted more of a shooter at the range, so I only suggested the more enhanced models. :)

Brian and I both own the Firestorm and Iver Johnson. The American Classic is the same gun as the Firestorm, just a different name. Both are made by Metro Arms. You get a lot of bang for the buck with these guns.

I am doing well to stay in close proximity to him. #50 and #51 arrive this week. Hopefully, I will be able to pull ahead by the end of the year. Even if I am able to, I am sure it will be temporary. For me, I am always on the hunt for another 1911.

I only own 54, I believe James. You'll pass me very soon. The only models I still plan to get this year are the Hartford and Morris Custom that's already paid for.

There's a small chance I'll pick up the new Cimarron too, but I want to see the gun first. Its built by Armscor.

I'm pulling the plug at an even 60 to focus on other parts of my collection. :)

Once you get to 57 or 58, you know you've passed me, becasue the most I'll have at year's end is 57. :)

I've got to go with the Metro Arms as well. I have it along with some Kimbers and Dan Wessons. The MA shoots well, is made well and one heck of a bargain for the price. I have never had the first problem with it.

Now comes the question; where is the best place for me to find the American Classic with a good deal? I'm also working a trade with a local shop owner for a higher end 1911, but I want the AC first to play around with before deciding.

If it was me, and I was using it for HD, I would step up up to the STI or Kimber for just under $700. If you want to carry, look at a ProCarry2 for just under $800. Just my $.02.

PC2 is 4" vs 5'' and aluminum frame (or stainless if you prefer for a little more).

This is a hell of a good deal for a nice carry gun.
Stainless PC for $800.

I like the STI Spartan. Adj sights out of the box for a range or plinking pistol at that price is a nice feature.

Just google american classic II and you will find some results. Make sure you get the deluxe model, not the straight version. Much better looking and only about $30-40 more. I don't know if Bud's has them now, they get them from time to time and usually list them as a Bersa. They are not a Bersa, but are imported by the same company.

I want to do this real bad I fully intend on killing a hog with a 1911 or at least with a handgun.

I highly recommend the Custom II/TLE II. There are other good ones mentioned also. I had two series 80's a SA GI and a milspec. The Colts are good but lack a few upgraded features. The same with the SA's, and I don't feel they're quite as nice as the lower end Kimbers. I think the Custom II/TLE II's offer great value in quality and shootability in that price range.

I would not have a problem carrying an American Classic in the woods or using it as a HD gun. Concealed carry would be another issue. I prefer a Commander-size 1911 for carry. I carry a Kimber Stainless Pro carry II.

thanks for the answers, but i'm not planning on Concealed Carry, have guns for that, just a reliable enough gun to carry in the woods (usually my .357 mag) & maybe home defense...thanks again Clint-M for letting me in this
