For self defense I usually use Golden Saber 185 grain JHP. I picked up Federal Premium .45 165 grain hydra-Shok JHP.

In regards to the grain is the 165 grain to little? Or should I be up around 185 grain.

Im not an expert on ammo grains. What grain should I be using in self defense? Thanks for advice ahead of time.

Only rarely do I stray away from 230 grain bullets in SD .45 acp loads.

It's still the .45 sized hole either way. IMO 165/185 will get you a little more velocity but the .45acp wasn't meant to be a fast type of round. The FPS you gain from the lighter load may not be worth the extra penetration you'd get from the extra weight.

Opinions vary.:whistling:

I personally wouldn't carry anything lighter than 200gr but I would only carry that if I couldn't get hold of anything in 230gr.

I'm not a big believer in sectional density but I think 165gr in .45ACP is getting too light.

I see that you have a G-30 and an M&P45. I don't know what the barrel length the M&P is but with respect to the 3.78" barrel on the G-30, I'd stick with the 230gr. loadings. With a G-30 barrel using 230gr., it's my understanding that you're losing 50 FPS compared to using the same load in a 5" barrel. However, using 185gr. loads in a G-30, you're losing about 150 FPS from what you'd get from a 5" barrel. That's pretty dramatic. I've told this silly little story before a few times already but I'll tell it anyway. I had a G-30 at the time and I saw this GS 185gr. +P test in some gun rag used against gel, fired from 5" 1911. Well, it was impressive with a huge stretch cavity and 12" of penetration. So I run out there a buy a slew of them. Problem is though, moving at a 150FPS less, the bullet isn't going to perform like that. (Likely wouldn't.) Also, GS's are jacket shedders unless they are bonded. (That's going to get me flamed for sure...) I might look at 185gr. loads in 4.5" to 5" barrels but with the G-30, I'd stay with 230gr. I wouldn't bother with 165gr. .45acp at all. Good luck what ever happens.

SecDen is relavent if bullet construction is th same. IMO, the 165grJHP is going to be light on penetration. They also keep the vel down to prevent fragmentation & enhance recoil control. Just not my choice. I have no issue w/ some 185grJHP loads, the 185grRGS is a great round. If oy ulike the lt.wt. try the 185gr-200grXTP.

I would not go below 185 grain in 45 acp myself with the 230 being my favorite. I doubt that the 165's will penetrate as deep as the heavier bullets. It really depends on your SD needs.

I like 230 230 or 230 in 45 ACP but that light a load may work
