Sharp Reveals Triple-Layer Blu-Ray Discs, Writers

Sharp is introducing new Blu-ray media and recorders that support the just-finalized BDXL format.

Friday Sharp revealed the world's first triple-layer Blu-ray Disc media capable of storing up to 100GB of data. Called the VR-100BR1, the write-once recordable disc conforms to the new BDXL format specification defined back in June.

"By using the existing Blu-ray technologies, we have created a long-term and stable solution for archiving large amounts of sensitive data, video and graphic images," said Victor Matsuda, Blu-ray Disc Association Global Promotions Committee chair when BDXL was finalized. "We expect further growth of the Blu-ray Disc market as the introduction of 100GB/128GB discs will expand the application of Blu-ray Disc technologies."

In addition to the extra layer, the new BDXL disc also features a hard coating on its surface, protecting the stored data from scratches and dirt that may give way to read and write errors.

The new BDXL disc is expected to land in Japan as of July 30, 2010, however currently no worldwide release date has been set. There's also no indication of when--or if--the company plans to launch a quadruple layer version capable of storing up to 128GB of data.

Friday Sharp also revealed the world's first BDXL drive that will read and write to the new format. The device will be included in two new Aquos Blu-ray Disc recorders and apparently will support the future quadruple layer disc.

The new Sharp BD-HDW700 and BD-HDW70 Blu-ray Disc Recorders are expected to hit Japanese retail shelves on July 30 as well. Unfortunately, no price points were provided.
