Slide

Took my 14 yr old shooting. 1st time using a used G17. The pistol functioned without any problems and my son hit the target every time.

However, when he finished his last magazine, the slide did not lock open after the last round. The slide did lock open after last rounds previously. I am not sure it was the same magazine though.

What may have caused the slide not to stay open? Thank you.

I take it the gun goes into slide lock when you shoot? If so, your son most likely has a slight case of limp wrist. He provides enough support (adequate at best) for the gun to cycle but not enough support to go into slide lock. Watch his shooting stance and see if his elbows are absorbing a lot of the recoil. Work with him to develop a better stance.
