Looking for some help from the 1911 experts. I have decided to take the plunge into the world of 1911s. I own Glocks, HK's, and a Smith J Frame, but have always been a bit overwhelmed by all of the 1911 options. My use for this gun is for range use and to learn and tinker with. I want something reliable as it may go backpacking with me, and not so expensive I can't buy a pair as I have a couple of son's I plan on passing my collection off too when I am underground. I hear all of these internet stories about this 1911 only works with Wilson mags or that 1911 needs some upgrade to make it work right and its really hard to separate internet expertise with gun store bravado. Anyway, I would really like to stay sub 1k and have been looking at the different Springfield entry levels. I keep reading very positive things about RIA as well. I had a chance to fondle the new Remington, but it wasn't love at first sight. Of course it doesnt have to be. Anyway, thanks for your advice in advance.

i would recommend the SA loaded and STI Spartan staying under a thousand. Right at the thousand mark though, you can get into the STI Trojan and that gun is truly a workhorse. The Spartan is a shooter as well, but lacks front strap checkering and a decent finish. The Trojan is the entire package!

Around $1k, if you are looking for a 5", the Trojan is hard to beat....or a Kimber Custom TLE2.

Thanks. I have seen the STI Trojan pics from the other thread that is going, but have never shot nor held one for that matter. I only know of STI from the threads and feedback around here. I will defiantly call around and see if I can find one at a gun store locally to check out.

Thanks Hokie - Kimber was one of those names I always thought went with reliability in the 1911 platform, but it gets blasted around here from time to time. I have rented one in years past and it was flawless at the range, but I could not begin to tell you the specific model.

After I posted I remembered it was a Warrior.

As mentioned elsewhere tonight...

RIA Tactical $450ish
Remington R1 $600ish
STI Spartan $650ish
Kimber Custom2 $750ish
Kimber ProCarry2 $800ish (4")
Kimber TLE2 $900ish
STI Trojan $1,000ish
STI Ranger2 $1,000ish (4.25")

Kimber sells more 1911s than just about anyone, so when you sell more....you have more issues out there. As such, their QC has slipped over the years a bit, and from what I hear, their CS can leave a lot to be desired. It's a love/hate thing. People either really like them, or had a lemon and will never own another. My thing is this...with so many out there.....for every 1 bad one you hear about....there's probably 1,000 happy Kimber owners. Pissed off people tend to rant on forums more.

Hokie thanks a ton. There definitely seems to be price tiers with these 1911s. I am going to try my best to track down a Trojan this weekend. Its my sons birthday party as well - every 6 yo needs a 1911 right!

No problem. LOTS of really knowledgeable guys in here to answer all of your 1911 questions.....plus a few VERY well known pistolsmiths, all eager to talk pistolas.

I hear ya, I've got a 12 year old that's already got dibs on mine.

Be careful...as a former Glock, HK, Sig guy and recent 1911 convert... you can go from entry level to lusting after a $2,500 semi-custom 1911 in a blink....and they're right...it's like Lays chips...you can't have just one.

Yeah, if you have friends with a bunch of nice 1911s, it's a good idea not to go to the range with them.

Mrs Hokieshooter doesn't like several of the members here for what she deems "bad influence". :whistling:

I haven't mentioned going to the range when I get back from Va to shoot Lawdog's NoName. I probably won't mention that come to think of it.

I can see her not liking me since you actually shot my guns, but she doesn't like bac1023 and he's not even in the same state as us

since you are near C-bus check out Vance's. I've bought quite a few guns from them.

I am heading down to Richmond, Va tomorrow and will be back a week from Sunday, so maybe that following week. Lawdog is a go, and I'm sure Knedrgr will go too.

I've never shot in any events to be honest. Although, it would be a good excuse to break out my Tactical gear.

I buy a lot from Buckeye Outdoors which is one of their sisters. I try to avoid going into Columbus if at all possible. Sometimes they run some good specials, but lord help you if you have to ask a question. Everytime I go in that store looking at 1911s I get "I am more of a rifle shooter" or "I am more into shotguns", etc etc.

i stop by c-bus whenever i am passing by, which is usually a few times a month. Guess i'm lucky because i always get the 1911 guys :)

I want a Guardian myself. If not that a Wilson Spec Ops 9. Im trying to decide which.

I had an STI Spartan for a while. Great gun for about $650. I shot one of the biggest hogs Ive seen with it.
