A while back I asked about spotting scopes on a budget and this was recommended to me (http://www.konusscopes.com/product/KON7120). I wondered if it was still the best option for the money, or should I be looking elsewhere?

TIA

Yes I did. The spotting scope rocks. The tripod that came with it sucks. Best price I found was at B&H Photo.

I generally do a lot of research B 4 purchasing and this seemed as though it would be a good scope at a decent price. I bought it and liked it. My friend used it and liked it, and bought one - but we've only used it out to 100yds so far.

I wear glasses and have no problem whatsoever. The tri-pod is iffy, but functional.

The case doesn't offer much protection. I picked up a foam-lined case at Wal-Mart for $10.

The cheapest I found was B&H Photo as well.

Any feedback at 200-300 yds

Local range maxes out at 200 yds and my friend may shoot that next weekend. I likely will not. If he does, I can post his opinion then. He's sometimes not as picky as me, though.

BH has it for around 190 shipped. Is that close to what you paid?

Curious...the only foam lined cases I see on Walmart's website are a LOT more than $10. Which did you get?

I just looked on the Wal-Mart site and cannot find that case (that was badged as 'Winchester' I believe), OR the other (water resistant case) I bought (w/o foam) badged as 'Plano' - but they're both sitting there in sporting goods. I think I remember them both being 10 bucks each.

I did find a nice Pelican case for my AR on their site, but those things are out of site!

Thanks Sardg, I guess I'll have to go to Wally World and do some urban exploration.

I stopped tonight and the foam-filled case is badged 'Plano' for $10.00 and the dry box is badged 'Remington' and is $9.97. I bought a second one of those.

Take your piece when you go! :)

I imagine these are found in the sporting goods section?

Thanks again Sardg. Much appreciated.

Yes, in my Wally World 1 case was on the shelf to the right of the ammo, the other across the aisle from the ammo.

So far, just use the one that came with it.

BTW, I didn't try it at 200-300 yds yet. At range today, but stayed at handgun distances.

Is it as bad as they say. I've read reports saying the optics are great but the durability isn't. So couple that with a unstabile tripod.... Is it overblown.

I've only had it about 2 months but the unit itself seems fine. Used it about 4 or 5 times. I see no particular reason to believe that it wouldn't lead a long life if taken care of. I mean, you can spend $2K-3K on a scope, but are they $1800-2800 better? I don't shoot competition rifle any more or I might have a different story.

I read the reviews and some people complained about the eye relief when wearing glasses, so that was a concern for me. I had no problems with glasses whatsoever. Some reviewers said the image isn't so good at max zoom, but I've only used it out to ~100 yds. My friend bought the same one after checking mine out and has used it a couple of times - but only at 100 yds max.

I'd hate to specifically recommend it and then you have problems, but to me it has good value and features for the money. Buy it from a place that has a liberal return policy in case you really can't stand it.

Most reviews on these lower cost scopes find the user wanting for a better tripod - on most brands. I saw a home-made 'tripod' today that was made out of 1/2" thick aluminum bar stock for the legs with a dampened single steel rod that the scope moved up and down on. The scope was secured with what looked like a clamp made from 1/4" aluminum bar stock with rubber padding to protect the finish of the scope. This guy had apparently purchased it from someone a couple of decades ago. I also frequently see camera tri-pods at the range but those are obvously too tall if you sight in while in the prone position (mostly during competition). Everyone at this range shoots from a bench or offhand anyway.

Other than what I've described above, can't say much. Will it last 1 year? Ten years? Dunno... If it isn't a Leica or Nikon, etc, ya just have to plop down your money and take your chances I guess. But I did get that (cheap) foam-filled case to protect my cheap scope 'cause on a cheapness scale, the bag was worse than the sticks.

I use a full sized camera tripod with it, and it's perfect.

Scored myself a Plano case for $10, and it's perfect. Thank you Sardg for the suggestion. Much appreciated!

You're welcome. Gotta be the cheapest shooting 'accessory' you ever bought. :)
