So I'm planning out my next handgun purchase, and I was looking for some input from you guys.

The next one is meant to be a carry gun (once I can carry here in IL) as well as something with a smaller round (various reasons).

Now, what I was considering was a Springfield Armory XDm 3.8 in either .40S&W. I fell in love with the XDm that was lent to me for a couple months, so of the plethora of polymer pistols on the market, this one jumped out at me.

But I'm a 1911 guy at heart, so I'd be very happy if there was a reliable 1911 variant in a smaller package shooting 9mm or .40S&W for a comparable price.

Is there any such gun created? Or is it simply a pipe dream born of inability to shell out 1k for an EMP or another Kimber? I know RIA makes an affordable 9mm, but it's a full size 1911, not exactly what I'm looking for. Same goes for all the smaller 1911s shooting .45acp etc.

Of course this is still in the planning phases, so it's entirely possible that I'll just pick up a Kimber Pro Carry or something.

Thanks for any help.

I'd say save your pennies for an EMP, they are good guns. Carrying an XDM would be cumbersome IMO but YMMV. Hopefully Springfield pulls their head out and chops the grip on the 3.8.

I would recommend trying to save for the EMP as well. In the category you listed, not much else compares

EMP or STI Ranger2. Both come in 9mm and .40.

Were you still planning on getting work done on it or leaving it as is?

still haven't called Dave to see if they can make a slide to make it a CCO.

I did forget about the STI, but they are right around the same price range as the EMP

The Ranger would be a couple hundy less.

Would you say it's a comparable shooter to the EMP? How's the reliability of the Ranger, I honestly had forgotten to check STI when looking around.

Haven't shot one. I did shoot Quack's 9mm EMP and it was freaking awesome. I would have no problem buying a Ranger site unseen. STI makes good stuff.

I guess I'll go with the "whichever 1911 jumps out at me most" since that's the method I used to decide on a polymer pistol.

Unfortunately for me, that narrows it down to an EMP. My poor wallet... pay for college...buy a gun....college...gun...

I went to camp Perry today and visited the springfield store. They had a couple of EMP's there.
