Are there any real-world differences between the 147 grn Hydra Shok and the 147 Ranger?

I'm getting tempted to acquire a new Gen 4 G19. My employer still authorizes personally owned 9 mms, but mandates the above two rounds for duty. I got away from 9s in 1999 and have been carrying 40s and 45s ever since. I previously worked for an agency that issued +P+s (9BPLE, 115 Win, and 124 HS) years ago before jumping on the 40-bandwagon itself. I would prefer one of those or the Win 127 Ranger because of their track record, but for now have to work within policy. I like the 40s and 45s, but will admit that I am probably faster and shoot tighter groups with 9 mm (even with the 147s). Plus, I am three years away from being eligible to retire and whenever I go, I'll have to buy my own ammo.

Of the two, I would definitely go with the Ranger-T JHP. When the 147 grain Hydra-Shok was more popular than it is now, there were several reports of it failing to expand. I'm getting field reports of much better results with the Ranger-T, and with Federal's own HST.

Thanks for the info. I'd read that the Rangers were very reliable expanders, but wondered how the 147s did in general. That said, I still adhear to the practice that shot placement is the key.
