View Full Version : Best solvent for removing carbon build up?
I have a Ruger SR 556 and I absolutely love it. However, the carbon build up on the gas regulator and piston is very hard to remove. I have tried M-Pro 7, Hoppe's 9, Montana Extreme Copper Killer, Blue Wonder Gun Gleaner, Break Free CLP, and even some spray-on brake cleaner. I used a good stainless steel brush and it is still too much work with any of them. What works for you?

Go to your local Ford dealer's parts counter.
Ask for "Motorcraft Carburetor Tune-up Cleaner"
Apply this to the parts, remove and soak them if possible.
A few hours the product will disolve/loosen the carbon.
You can also dampen a patch and place on the part/piece to loosen the carbon
Thanks. I'll give that shot.
Also a product out there called Carbon Kleen.
soak the part in it.
Brownells also has a new carbon soaking agent

Soak in Gunzilla, then work it over with a dental pick
