I don't really think of it as for defensive purposes, but surely it would do the job as it is kept razor sharp.

While I don't really fall into the carrying a knife for defensive purposes "thats what the gun is for", but 99% of the time I carry an Emerson CQC-8 or Commander. As for defense anything that is fixed blade or capable of 1 hand opening that is kept any form of sharp is enough for defense.

I think people tend to put too much thought into a "defensive knife". As a Leo, I always carry my knife in a good location for defense/weapons retention and off duty I keep the locations of everything the same for muscle memory purposes. As far as "tac knives" go, a steak knife will hack you up as good as anything else.

The Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto is what I usually carry. I also carry one with the Spear Point. To use it for defensive purposes would be a last resort - surprise!!
It is a fast, easy open knife that is easy to sharpen.

Bought a Spyderco Native, plain edge, several years ago at Wal-Mart when the still had them. Cheap price so what the heck, I'll try it. It has been one of the best knives I have carried, still using it. And I have carried a knife for a long time.

ZT's are good knives.

I carry the Med Voyager with tanto point and half serration. For $42 it's been a great knife for about 5 years.

Good pick with the Izula. I think it's about the best bang for the buck defensive knife around.

As for me, typically a shivworks clinch pick at 11 o'clock and concealed handgun at 1 o'clock. Goofy knife laws in my city force me to not carry a folder, but when I do it's a Emerson mini-commander (wave).

If I were in a non-permisive environment (knife only) it'd be the emerson fixed-blade karambit. Totally NPE, it'd be the Emerson la griffe.

Anyone who thinks of the blade as only a backup weapon at normal bad-breath distance needs to take a force on force class. At anything under 10', it (a quick-access fixed blade) would be my FIRST choice.

Yeah, I think I would rather be shot, than stabbed or slashed by a knife.

Ok, honest question - what is the purpose of regrinding a blade? What would be gained?

You can change the geometry of the blade edge. In this case from a chisel grind to a saber grind it looks like. It can make sharpening easier and strengthen edge. It can also make cutting some items easier.

I see. Just comes down to personal preference on blade geometry. Thank you.

I carry a Benchmade 9500 SBK auto and love it, best knife I've ever used. I was hesitant about spending that much money on a knife, but I have no regrets! The quality (as I'm sure Emerson, Microtech, etc. are the same if not better) is phenomenal.

How much was the re-grind and how long was the turn around? They look great.

I believe Tom is charging about thirty five bucks presently, plus shipping, but you'd have to call him. Very nice guy. Turnaround time was very quick. I think on one of my knives he only had it a few days. I believe he took paypal, which made the turnaround very fast.

Ok, honest question - what is the purpose of regrinding a blade? What would be gained?

I really like Emerson knives. Emerson uses a chisel grind, or variations thereof, on most of his knives. There are reasons for it, but the result isn't an even bevel, of course, or a knife that's as easy to use for cutting in both directions. The knives are designed to be tough and field-sharpenable, and they are, but the best edge I ever had on one was a convex quickie edge that someone did for me on a wheel.

Tom Krein does regrinds on a lot of Emerson knives. It makes for a slightly hollow ground blade. he doesn't do a razor feather edge, but it's easily sharp enough for anything I might need to do with the blade. I was concerned when I sent him my first blade, because I thought perhaps the blade might be thin and fragile. It's not.

The CQC-15 came with a tanto blade. I ended up with a couple of small chips in the blade anyway, and when I called Tom to talk to him about doing that knife, he said he does, but he doesn't like to do the regrind and keep the tanto edge. He said he can, but he does a reprofile that leaves the blade without the tanto angle, more of a continuous slow recurve, like the Commander. I was quite pleased with the blade when I got it back.

Emerson likes combo edges, and has stated that he doesn't think one should carry a defensive knife without serrations. Personally, I can't sharpen serrations, and they're nice when one is home and domestic, but they reduce the utility life of the blade in the field...if one can't sharpen it, what's the point (no pun intended)? Therefore, for me, a plain-edge blade is ideal, and the regrind on the Emerson blades is the edge I'd prefer to have received from Emerson in the first place. Nothing against the edges Emerson provides, of course; they come sharp, durable, and effective. I just like the regrinds a lot more.

One of the most comfortable knives I've ever carried was last year's model Cold Steel large Voyager. Very slim and not too many rough edges for waist band carry.
