Do they do a good job cleaning the gun?

Yes they do.

Any drawbacks to them compared to the standard method?

I'm not really a fan, as I'd rather do a good cleaning with rods and brushes than use a bore snake and do a half arsed job. I'm sure you could do a through cleaning with one but you'd have to run it through quite a few times, and it's not worth the trouble.

Here's a link to another thread on bore snakes:

Some like them, some don't.

Bore snakes are great! I can't really imagine how else you'd scrub all the fouling and crap off the inside of a shotun barrel. Since shotgun barrels aren't rifled inside, they don't grab the kind of lead and fouling a rifle or pistol does. A few runs through with a bore snake and you're good as new.

I use them on my handguns and they do a great job then I do a more break-down cleaning on them periodically. Just never heard of them used for shotguns though it makes sense. Thanks.

They aren't for use with any sort of leading or copper fouling problems. But for normal cleaning, I haven't seen any issues. One advantage is that you can clean rifle barrels from the chamber out, whereas on many types of rifles it's a muzzle only proposition. And, cleaning from the muzzle and lead to damaged crowns and rifling if not done correctly. Not sure, but I get the impression from what I've read, that this is the reason it was developed. That and they are darned handy to carry as opposed to traditonal cleaning rods.

No. They do not. They are great for dusting or touchups, but do not actually clean the weapon anywhere near properly.

I tried one and think it might have some use as a field expedient. I would never rely on one to do a thorough job of cleaning the bore.
