Here it is next to a 50 bmg, 308 and 5.56. You think it's enough gun?

Bring enough gun.
I believe it was either Jeff Cooper or Clint Smith who said "no one ever survived a gunfight and complained of having too much ammunition or too big a gun"

Yeah but the OP said it was his new deer gun.
There is such a thing as having too much deer gun. Especially if you have to carry it very far.

I don't think that's a .308 in the picture. Looks more like a 30-06 round.
And the title of this thread is what most ( today's) deer hunters think they need. More gun.
This year, I'm hunting with a gentlemen using a 25-06, somehow a 20mm is not what he needs to place deer a down.
You would would think some really believe that a Deer is Armor plated and klingon at that

I'm building an AR15 for deer hunting and it is going to be a .25-223 wildcat.
Ok guys it seems that many of you are missing the reason of this post. No I'm not hunting deer with a 20mm. I deer hunt with a bow and a blackpowder rifle. It was a joke, a funny, not meant to be taken seriously.

I think we understood that and are just commenting on some peoples belief that they need a bigger/better gun for deer hunting when in fact what they need is better skills.

Would be interesting to see.
On the guy shooting the 25-06, I pulled my 180gr 30-06 and 150gr 280remington out and said " damm that's a small bullet "
He did kind of get me thinking when we worked up the reload cost per bullet vrs my 280remington thing I got going on. For the cost of bullets and a hunting/target platform, the smaller 25caliber does make a lot of sense.
Also in the 06 cases the lighter 120gr bullet had almost zero recoil when compared to a heavyweight 30-06, I would assume the same for a 25cal in a 223 case.

Because of case size and magazine length the .25-223 tops out with 100 gr bullets.
But with the 80-100 gr bullets it give performance about on par with the .250-300 Savage.
Should be a fun little deer hunting gun in a 16" AR15.

I think I need a 20mm...and a winning lottery ticket so that I can afford to shoot it.

20mm? Yeah but since you're into black powder might as well give a cannon a try!

Last year I used the 30-06 and just about blew the deer in half. I think I am going to stick with the 223 this year.
