What is the best shotgun for HD and fun for less than $600 in your opinion?

I'm looking at AI&P's stuff right

http://www.aiptactical.com/Tactical_II.html

And this one at Bud's

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/64/products_id/41870.

I like the location of the 870's safety better than the Mossberg.

ETA: I'm short (5'6", 150 lbs), so I want the short LOP and I like the Knoxx.

get a factory 870 with the 18" barrel and 6 shot mag. add the knox stock. keep it simple.

I also like the Mossberg 590A1. It has a lot of features for less than $500.

I have to admit, I'll pay a bit more for the added cool factor, as long as it's a great gun. :embarassed:

But, by the time I spend $460 (est'd) and then add the Knoxx at $100 plus shipping, I come out to what the Remington 870 Tactical is off the shelf.

For a bit more, I can get one of the AI&P 870's.

Shotgun Newbie here, so for what it's worth...I picked up an 870 Express Tactical a couple of weeks ago. I bought mine at a local gun shop, but if IIRC Buds has them for < $450 delivered. That should keep you well within budget even after adding in a Knoxx stock.

Also, I put a Knoxx on this weekend because like you, I need the shorter LOP. I put about 100 rounds through it the last couple of days, so I'm still getting used to it. Regardless, I'm very happy with the latest addition to my family.

I've had a few 870's, M500's and a 590. I recently bought an 870 Tactical and love it - drilled and tapped, already, plus the Rem-choke. Great SG.

So, really, I should go ahead and buy a shotgun with what I want instead of piecing it together. I have to have the short LOP, and I want the recoil reduction.

Who else votes for the 870 Tactical or spending more for the AI&P?

Cheaper to get a youth 20ga and you wont be losing anything powerwise and gain easier ammo manipulation.

Save your money and use the extra dollars for traininig or ammo to practice.

you can also look at used and if you look around should find a good deal on an 870, 500, 590, 1300, etc

Best? There is no standard best. Thats like asking what is the best beer? Or best pizza? Or best BBQ? Is subjective to your own needs and wants that makes it best for you.

For me, I have owned Mossbergs, Remingtons and a Benelli. My Benelli SuperNova Tactical is the best for me as a home defense shotgun. It took owning both Mossbergs and Remingtons to figure it out but now I know.

I handled the 870 HD Express today and a 500 Persuader. The ghost ring sights on the 870 with the breacher end SUCK. The 870 with the bead was NICE. The Mossberg felt lighter, looser, and a shiny finish that I DO NOT like at all. The 870 felt better to me.

870 wins today, IMHO. If it wasn't at Dick's, I might have bought it, but, I will check with my local shop this week first. I still need a shorter LOP, though.

People don't know what they don't know until they know what they don't know = I too have gone to the Benellis and think highly of the Novas

This is why I preach try before you buy and try as many different types of firearms you can.

Out of the "sub-$500" shotguns I've had in the past (500, 590, 870, SNT, Mav 88), the one that was the "most fun" to shoot was the Benelli SuperNova tactical w/pistol grip. With the GRS, I was really accurate with it at 50-75 yards. Throw in a LimbSaver recoil pad on the stock, and it was the easiest and more comfortable shotgun to shoot (for me).

The only bad things about the SNT are the aftermarket parts availability and pricing for them (more expensive than 500 or 870 parts), and it was a really long gun. Felt good when you held it and shot it, but then I'm tall and my shorter friends had some trouble with it. It's not ideal for HD because of how long it is, where as my shorter Mav 88 with PGO was much easier to maneuver around with and to stow away.
