Hogs are tough, having said that would you use 150 or 180 grain bullets in a 300 wsm ?

Really depends upon the construction of the bullet.

If it's something like a Nosler Partition or a Barnes all copper I'd be fine with the 150.

If you are going with the budget Core Lokt's or Power Points you might want to step up to the heavier bullet if you are expecting big hogs.

Anyone else ?

shot placement - bullet construction - caliber - bulletweight

in that order. as you obviously don't even have the skills for the first aspect, don't bother thinking about the others..

One of my buddies picked up a new 300 WSM a few years ago. He killed a good sized bull moose with the 180 grain Winchester Power Point. This was the best shooting load in his gun so he chose it over the super premium bullets. I would go with what shoots best in the gun within reason as far as the bullet construction goes. Guys kill hogs with handguns so I would think a 300 WSM loaded with just about any 150 to 180 grain bullet designed for big game would do the trick.

The 300wsm just seems more suited to 180 grain bullets, or maybe drop down to 165. I'd be inclined to use 180 grains for just about everything with a 300 wsm.

Sourdough 44 thanks maybe I'll do that it sounds good , a 180 grain bullet at 3000 fps

I loaded a 180 grn partition in my 300wsm to a fairly modest 2815 chronographed FPS with H-4350 & it still went through the B bear I bagged with it. It was mostly a soft tissue shot though. If I don't NEED max power, I don't have the desire to always be there. It's easier on the shoulder(A-Bolt),the gun, & the case that will be reloaded. I was a little over gunned but you never know when the 450lb'er will show up.

Federal loads the 180 grain NP in the 30-06 to 2700 and the 300 H&H to 2880. Either of these two loads will take any medium to big game in North America. Your load looks like a great all round choice.

Colonel,
With a 300wsm, you shouldn't have any problems with weight, shot placement is key. I shoot them all the time with a 308 and 150 grain soft points or with my 7mm-08 and 140 grain soft points. Its all shot placement. Keep in mind that their heart/lungs are a little lower in their body than a deer. You can go to www.texasboars.com and they have a good diagram there.

Also good to see a fellow Cowboys fan here. Let the flaming begin.:tongueout:

Being the "red blooded American" :patriot:that I am, I'd choose a 180 gr. bullet. After all, bigger is better.:nsb:

I'm a Cowgirls fan, by the way.:cheerleader:

I would already be sighted-in using 150 grn bullets for deer.

I would not think twice about using them on hogs.

I use a 6.8 Wilson Combat with a 110 grain bullet. It works every time. Shot placement is key . Spin shot just behind the neck . If you hit it in the shoulder you might have a problem.
