I saw these Winchester Extreme (Elite) shells for sale in the Cabelas catalog. They look interesting and have 3 00 Buck pellets and a JHP slug to boot.

Seems like it'd make a real mess.

But with so many slug rounds out there for 12ga...what are the different purposes they serve and which serves each purpose best?

I'd like to find the one that penetrates barriers (doors/windows/etc.), one that shreds soft targets the best, etc.

Please share your thoughts, experiences and preferences.

Thanks!:)

I have some of those 12 ga. PDX1s but I haven't tried them.

Federal's LE website has a catalog that shows their slugs in gel after passing through barriers.

I'm kind of either/or when it comes to slugs and buckshot.
When I want a large hole and infinite penetration, I use slugs....I want the increased range and accuracy slugs provide.

If I want short range power and multiple hits, buckshot. The right loads also lower the issue of shooting through the entire home.

The PDX idea may have some merit in the lighter gauges like the .410, but I'm not sure I want the qualities of 'both' in my 12ga home gun.

I use Brennekes for slugs, I like the wadcutter profile and they get better accuracy in my experience.

Maybe I'm just too "old school" but I'm thinking either a slug or 00 buck will work just fine. Sometimes you can overthink and as the saying goes, " If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

You can buy/build them...just look up "dragonsbreath" rounds. The same company that sells them sells some really nasty 12ga. rounds including flechette shells. I don't think they are the true flechettes that are 4-6 inches long...but they seem pretty lethal nonetheless.

Just fill the wad cup in a 12 guage hull with finishing nails. Talk about nailing their hide to the wall......

They aren't exactly aerodynamic though...I'd expect them to go everywhere.

For slugs I like Fed. Tru-Ball 12ga slugs. You can even get them in low recoil. That and I like Brenekke KO slugs.

The original Brenneke are the slugs that sets the standards for unrifled barrels.

Wouldn't nails tumble? Fleschettes have fins for a reason. Still would be nasty though.

Right that's what I was thinking. The finishing nails would go all over.
