View Full Version : So I got this Thompson A/O 1911 and...

Okay...
So I got this Thompson Auto-Ordnance 1911 ...
I know they don't have a cult following like many 1911's and it's not my only 1911....
My Brother-in-law was going to sell me his Thompson 1927 and I found this 1911 and figured I could fix it up and they would make a cool " Pair"
Well my Bro-in-Law blew up the 1927 with some bad reloads he just had to shoot .... now I got this 1911.....
As you can see from the Pics it's not in great shape ... but all the pieces are there and it shoots...
I've never " Built " a 1911 before so I figure I might just buy the internal parts for it... put a new trigger on it... the barrel is " okay"....
I figure I'll do as much as I can then take it to a smith and let them give it a tuneup....
Just looking to learn someting and add a decent shooter to the collection..

Where should I start ????? Ha..... ( I know toss it in the trash and buy a .............. ( insert name brand here).....!!!



I want to clean up the frame ( how?)
Maybe have it blued or parkerized..???
I don't expect it to come out NIB looking...

Any thoughts ... or comments ?????

send it off for a flash chrome job and replace what internals are worn. should make a nice gun as is unless damage is found.

I prefer Cylinder and Slide internals, but many makers offer trigger jobs in a box type sets.

Start with the books, make a plan, execute one step at a time.

I've always liked the way those Thompsons looked, especially that older one w/o the FCS. Should be a fun project.

It's funny the slide is really the cool part of the gun... just something about that bullet logo I guess....

Curious, what did you lay down for it? Looks like a fantastic project gun. Hard to tell from the photos on my PC, but is it stainless or regular steel. If it's not stainless, I would get a nice blueing finish on it. A really nicely executed blue 1911 is a work of art. Maybe send it away to a professional finisher for this. Just what I would do. :)

Personally, I would leave it as is. The petina on this gun gives it character. Give it a good oiling, put it back together, and enjoy it. If you change your mind about keeping it, let me know. I would be happy to own it.

It was 250 bucks................I figured I could not really go wrong at that price..
It's blued steel.....but it's got a layer of "gook" on the internals... Kinda like a brownish dried film that craks off when I try cleaning it......
The Slide stop is " sloppy"..... It doesn't work unless you play around with it. The Barrel nut is cracked.... Those are cheap but I gotta figure out why/how it cracked .....

Trigger guard looked like the previous owner was using it to open beer bottles....I sanded it down to smooth it out....

I can't figure how a " Non-Service" gun can get so hacked up....
(non-service meaning not Military or LEO use)
Even daily carry would not cause that kind of wear.....

1911's are like the small block chevys of the gun world.
You can run the crap out of em and rebuild em.
Run the crap out of em and rebuild em.
Add custom parts or keep it stock.
I would rebuild it and have it parkerized.
