From research I've done on .38 SPL, it seems that the short barrel version of Gold Dots are the most popular. Can't help you on the others.
I would load DPX for all three or ranger talon or SPGD

Ranger 45 ammo is easier to find than the 45 HST. I have so much of the Ranger in stock that I have been tripping over it.

Yeah, hotpig, I missed a comma, it shouldve read Winchester Ranger T-Series, and if you can find them, Federal HST. Hopefully soon I can take some of the Ranger off your hands in quantity.

I load my S&W 642 with Hornady 158gr. JHP XTP.

.38 and/or .357 - The SB Gold Dot ammo has really received some excellent reviews in both of these calibers. Win PDX1 would also be a consideration. I spoke with one of their techs a couple of weeks ago about the function in a snubby. He stated that within 20 yards it would work great because, even with the velocity loss (about 100fps going from 4 to 2 inch barrel) it would still be within the window it was designed to expand at. The PDX1 is rated at 950fps out of a 4 inch test barrel, so approx. 850fps is really about the same as the GDSB ammo.
.45 - Again, GDSB or the PDX1 stuff should be fine. Either gives you enough weight to be able to penetrate to vitals with reliabel expansion.

Hornady's 125gr FTX is a comfortable shoot out of a snub nose and it doesn't clog up going through thick outer clothing.

I carry whatever the local LEO's carry, currently 200g GDHP in .45, 124g +P HST or 147g GDHP in 9mm.

For my .38 Smith snub-nose, I use CorBon Pow'R Ball.
My 36 loves the Corbon 185g +P DPX.
It told me so.
