jrs93accord (http://www.glocktalk.com/forums/member.php?u=47828)-The fourth pic down you posted-which model is that? Reminds me of a Colt Combat Commander. I like it! But, I saw this statement on Bud's and wasn't too turned on by it...

"Kimber aluminum frames have been tested to over 20,000 rounds without evidence of meaningful wear."

20K rounds? It would take me a long time to go through that many but something about that statement bothered me.

It is a customized Custom II that was inspired by the MEUSOC 1911. The grips are one of ten sets made by VZ Grips. The previous owner had the mods done. I have thought about having a Dawson rail installed, but not totally sold on the idea just yet.

I'm totally blown away at the cost of 1911's these days. The last one I bought was about $450...a SA model if I recall. My first, a Colt Mk IV Series 70 was $159.95. Yep, I know, that was decades ago, along about 1973. Most I've looked at today are in the average range of $1100-1800 now be it Colt or Kimber. I just can't go there.

It is an Ultra Tactical. I do not mind the officer-sized 1911s. There is a little more recoil to them, but not a concernable amount. The Ultra Tactical is a nice pistol to have.

I only have one, in stainless. I have had it for years and I bought it used originally.

Contrary to testaments in GT, I have NEVER had a single issue of any kind. I have shot WWB and Wolf without a single problem. I usually shoot 300 to 400 rounds for each trip to the range.
'
It is reliable and accurate. I wouldn't hesitate to trust my life to it.

I will not debate it's qualities.

Here's my one and only Kimber. It is a Custome TLE II. The only changes I've made is I replaced the factory grips with VZ's and replaced the plastic MSH with a Kimber metal magwell/MSH.

So far it's been less than 100% reliable, but I'm just now nearing the end of the Kimber recommended "break-in", so hopefully things will work themselves out. Reliability has steadily increased the last few times I've shot it, so I'm cautiously optimistic about it.

Hey, c'mon guys - you can only shoot two at a time.

Yes but you can fondle hundreds.

James, where are you?

...I only have three myself. ;)

.I can't believe I actually have more pistols from a specific manufacturer than bac. That must be some kind of miracle. My Kimber count is at 4 with my fifth and only other 1911 being a Colt.

I regret that I only have two now (Desert Warrior and Stainless PRO CARRY II). At one time, before I was unemployed and needed the money, I had 16 Kimbers. I also had the same number of Colts. I had 81 1911s in all and now I am down to 37.

the stainless Pro Carry II is a fantastic 1911. love mine. I was fixing my fence and sweat dripping down my PCII all day in FL heat. alloy frame and plastic MSH does not care at all!

Yeah, I generally don't get too hung up on any one builder of 1911. :)

Sorry about the poor lighting. It was my first 1911 and is still my favorite. It is also the only 1911 I own that needed no extractor adjustment or minor polishing of the feed ramp to get it to run reliably. It has shot perfect since it came out of the box.

It is an Ed Brown Magwell with metal MSH. It dropped right in with no fitting which surprised me as every other 1911 part I have ever bought needed at least slight adjustment to fit. The only other things done to the pistol are the Kimber carbon fiber grips, VZ grip screws and o-rings, and Wilson magazines as the Kim-pro mags did not feed reliably for me.

This is a very, very old thread so I would like to mention that, and it still holds true today, that I really love the Kimber hate. It really brings out the fools when it comes to 1911s and really keeps down the prices down a bit of the Custom Classics made in the late 90's.

After that and a few hundred rounds each, they are some very accurate and reliable pistols that were all $1000 or so give or take a few dollars. Some of the options they come with from the factory could easily drive other 1911's in the same class well above that dollar amount once customized. I think the hate that made me laugh the most was someone calling the name and font girly. The Kimber hate truly is a phenomenon though that I have not seen on any other 1911 manufacturer.

So let me ask you Kimber lovers,

I always wanted a super match, None of the dealer I have dealt with would ever order one. they always said you'll never get one. So fast forward a couple of years to today and I see a bunch of them on gun broker below MSRP.

Is this a must Have 1911, How great a firearms is it.

Currently I have 2 kimbers . A tactical TLE and a Team match my son shoots.

I seriously doubt you will find very many Kimber lovers here or at any other forum. The lower end Kimbers hold their own very well at the price point. There are a lot of fools that want to talk **** about Kimbers but the lower end ones are very good 1911s for the money. If anyone tries to tell you different they have their head up their ***. :dunno:

Mine has been awesome right from the moment I first touched it. I love my TRP Operator too but if there could be only one, the Kimber would be the one staying.

Carbon fiber of some sort, I guess. Not my thing, but I know many like them.

what are the stock panels on the raptor??? those look amazing? They are OEM grips from Kimber in carbon fiber. The area where you can see the pattern is slippery after a bit of shooting, but the spot with the logo has been sanded and has a grip tape feel to it which provides plenty of grip. They have yellowed slightly over the years, but still look great. I am actually about to order another set as I ordered these before I got the magwell and I know I am nitpicking, but the bottom where they taper in bothers me.

Carbon fiber of some sort, I guess. Not my thing, but I know many like them.I love the look of finished but unpainted carbon fiber. I wanted an all black 1911 and did not care much for the color of the factory grips that came with it and the texture on them did not provide much grip, so I did not lose anything with half of the carbon grips being polished.

Carbon fiber seems to be one of those things where it is either liked or disliked. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground.

I like the look of carbon fiber, but not on a gun.Honestly I agree with you. Most of my carbon fiber parts are on my project car. When looking for ebony grips for the raptor, I came across those and they looked very well made and not too overstated. If those grips didn't have that large section textured to provide grip, the carbon would stand out far to much to look good.

I just found out Kimber is not manufacturing them anymore, so it took me some searching, but I found a set for the compact/ultra and bought them for my Eclipse. My opinion on how they will look is up in the air still and they may end up in my parts box rather than on the pistol.

I'd like to have a set of the carbon fiber grips, but I don't have a spare Kimber lying around that I could put them on.
