My FFL dealer recently told me that he could get me a NIB Limited Match, in 38 Super no less. So I thought for a while then decided what the hell, I might never see another LM in Super again so I'd better jump on it.

I've really blown the budget on 1911s, I think this may be my last one for the next few months. I'm really looking forward to it though, I'll probably have it hard chromed or possibly done in "black t". Anyway, I'll try to borrow a camera and get some pics up upon arrival.

Bac's rra in black T is my favorite example of a custom 1911.

There ya go again, Brian.

That and the Yost are the ultimate 1911 eye candy.

Perhaps you could pair 'em together for a few shots and email 'em to me.

Hard chrome is great and vastly improved these days over 10-15 years ago.

So what is this "finish" called? I'm trying to plan out how I want my 1911 (down the road). I like black, and I like this finish way better than the finish on the Les Baer on this thread:
http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1278207

How will this finish hold up to wear? Any other info I can get would be nice.

That Baer is blued, which is more or less a controlled rust. In great condition, bluing is beautiful to look at, but it shows wear immediately with use.

My RRA's finish is called "Black T", which is a teflon based black finish. Its very slick and durable.

Bluing can look very nice. In fact, I think its probably the best looking finish a 1911 can have. Unfortunately, its the least durable.

Bluing, of course, can be a high polish, like this Colt, Ed Brown, or Iver Johnson...

...or have a flatter look, like this Valtro, Yost, or Firestorm.

Yep, definitely prefer that "Black T".

Black-T is fairly soft, it will not hold up to moderate use.

If you like it, go for it, but for a little more $, there are better choices if wear/durability is a concern.

This has become a "range only" pistol for some unfortunate reasons. Not the best pic but this wear has come from a MTAC and MS VM-II and about 6-8 months of use.

There is a fortune waiting to be made by somebody who can figure out how to develop a coating or plating process that can duplicate the appearance of great bluing work but with the added durability of some of the newer finishes.

And congrats on a phenomenal pistol 38SF, as I have a soft spot for the 38 Super cartridge this thread really caught my eye.

Thanks, I think this might actually be the last LM to ever leave RRA, not totally sure. It apparently has been sitting around for awhile, so I even got it at a reduced price. Reduced from the price they wanted a couple months ago that is, still not what they were a few years ago.:wavey:

Why is that? Do you find just more fun to shoot?

A lot of people do, as its a softer recoiling round.

It was also the only round designed specifically for the 1911.

Sure. I always ask this question of .38 super fans because I try to convince myself to buy one. However, I've already got two in 9mm so it seems superfluous to me atm unless I am just missing something or there is an advantage I have not thought of. :dunno:

I like the history that goes along with the Super, in addition to the fact that I find it more fun to shoot. It's really got really unique history that really sets it apart from other cartridges. To me it has the highest "cool factor" of any cartridge. I also like guns that aren't very common, there's lots of 1911s out there, but not really a huge percentage are Supers. I guess I just like things that are a little different, or uncommon.

Most Def. Thank you for the well thought out response. A lot of Texas rangers carried .38 supers. Some still do. Ive met a few.

I like the .38 Super as well, although I only have one. For a long time, Colt sold many .38 Supers South-of-the Border because the laws of Mexico forbade civilian ownership of military calibers.

What pistol(s) do you have chambered in .38 Super?

The RRA will only be my second 38 Super. My current one is one of the polished stainless "Colt Custom" guns. It's a nice BBQ gun. I really like this Special Combat you've posted, very nice. :wavey:

The 38 Super fits the 1911, unlike the 9mm.

If I ever got a 1911 in a caliber other than 45ACP, it would be 38 Super, nothing else.

It's a beauty Brian. I shoot a lot so I had Les Baer build me a Premier II in 9mm, long before he routinely did such things, in order to drop costs. With the supported barrel it is embarrassingly easy to shoot one-ragged-hole groups. But, you're right, I like the Colt .38 Super better.
