Can I release the slide(letting it go forward)...

and hold the trigger down all the way without damaging the gun? I ask this because I want to be able the take the slack out of the trigger for the follow up shot.

No problem. That is exactly what you are supposed to do! Pull the trigger, release it just enough to let the connector re-set then fire it again.. If you dry fire the gun you will learn this quicker.
