Just bought Springfield A1 45 acp

I just bought a Springfield A1 45 acp Stainless I cleaned gun and reassembled I have never shot it and don't know anything about 1911s should the slide go forward like my Glock when I rack it or do I need to use the slide release.Gun is used but looks like new.

Either or would work. Personally I grasp the slide and pull it fully to the rear.
Just don't drop the slide on an empty chamber.

There are opposing thoughts on that, but the consensus seems to be it can damage the sear and hammer.

Congrats on a fine 1911, you'll love it! I "slingshot" mine. And I agree on not doing it on a empty chamber.

congrats on your venture to the 1911 world. its an amazing platform. as for releasing the slide, try both and see what you like best. I shoot matches so I always use the slide stop, a little faster than slingshot

Slingshot. That way you get the full slide cycle. Plus in a high-stress, do or die situation I feel it would be easier to slingshot than drop the slidestop. Also, either way don't drop the slide on an empty chamber. Its bad for the gun. Can damage the trigger action. High end manufacturers have put this in writing. I believe Wilson Combat is one of them.

congrats. slide release, but like everyone says, never on an empty chamber. if you reload from slide release, it's not as powerful a release, and it will give you an idea if that particular brand of ammo might give you some feeding probs.
