View Full Version : thinking of upgrading

I am thinking of upgrading to a better 5" 1911, (don't have room in my budget or safe for a bac style 1911 fetish)

Currently have:

Kimber Ultra w/CT's(I like it and carry it and has been very reliable, no bashing please)

CBOB, love it, sometimes carry it

SW1911, the standard stainless "billboard", never carry it, mostly a nightstand gun but like it

have also owned: PT1911, total POS, and an RIA Officer, reliable but heavy as a brick for a "small" gun

I would like a better but not too pricey 5" that also might be better suited to IDPA.

So far thinking TRP or Valor, would like to stay in that $1,100-$1,300 range (obviously a great gun for less is a consideration though)

TRP seems very well suited to competition but have also been very happy with my other DW.

Both the TRP and Valor are great options. I would also include the STI Trojan in there at the $1k range. Also the Lawman from STI, should be included in the decision with the TRP and Valor too! STI really makes a super quality firearm and offers great CS. Very similar to how good SA's is.

Some hard decisions there; Valor, TRP and Lawman. I guess that would be the order for me.

The problem i run into with the Valor is everytime i have thought about purchasing one of them, I soon after said why would i get the Valor if for only a little more I could get a Baer or nice used semi-custom. TRP and Lawman are priced in a way that definitely puts them in a lower category

I feel the Valor is a bit too expensive these days for what they are. They were a value before.

Go with an STI Trojan or Springfield TRP.

I'm still new in the 1911 type guns but I would if I were given the choice(s) of the ones you listed I would lean towards the TRP after handling all 3 models at my local dealer.

STI Trojan hands down.... IMO.

Thanks for the input folks. I will update this question on Monday as well with prices added, I think what I can get a given model for comes in to play as well. I think I could get the biggest "bargain" on the TRP.

I will get prices on the TRP, Valor and hopefully Lawman and Trojan from my dealer (never seen STI in stock other than 2011's).

Yeah, for that purpose, I'd probably pick the Trojan over the TRP.

We agree on this. I've handled the TRP and Valor. I'll take the TRP given the price the Valor has swelled to.

I had a Springer .40 that I played with in IDPA, and USPSA and bought a Trojan .40 as a "back up" gun. I liked the Trojan so much that I sold the Springer and bought another Trojan. With the undercut trigger guard, the Trojans fit MY hands better, and are a lot more accurate than any of the Springers I've shot.

If your going to get a STI, just go through Brazo's, Dawson, or Oak Hill Ent. They all have great prices

Got some numbers on some of them today:

STI Trojan: $940
STI Ranger III: $1050 (I know it's a commander, but looked nice)
TRP: $1240
DW: all he had was the CBOB in stock new (holy crap! I only paid $950ish for mine, now @ $1250!) he is going to check on price on a Valor for me (I think he said Pointman 7 was about $1020?)

I did dig around in the back room and found a very nice PM9 with beveled magwell and 5 mags for $950, very gently used in box with all papers and a CBOB 10MM in same condition for $870. Should have never gone in there.......

Considering all of the posts for a Trojan in this thread I think that is the way I am leaning after seeing prices.

You could take your S&W1911 and the $1000 bucks you are thinking of spending to a good Gunsmith and make it into your perfect IDPA gun, and still have some left for the holster, belt and mag carriers.

I like this guy -- but there are lots of good ones.

My local guy charges $20 over wholesale on everything. We are friends, I have owned my own business for years and have told him multiple times it is a bad plan. But he has been there 25 years and is jampacked almost all the time. But seriously: ANYTHING is cost plus $20.

Or I could sell the SW1911 for $600+ at the next gun show and pay another few hundred for a Trojan and the few upgrades I want (beveled magwell is all that comes to mind on that gun) and I already have holsters and mags and carriers.....

He does very high volume, I would bet he sells more guns than Sportman's and close if not more than Cabela's.

But seriously: I have seen him sell a Barrett M82A1 for $20 over.

Yep. An $8K rifle for a $20 profit.

He will also let you put that $8K rifle on layaway for a year.

And then let you change your mind 6 months in and give you your cash back. I have seen a-holes do this type of thing to him.
