Hey everybody,
Im possibly going deer hunting in Alabama next season. I've never been. The only rifles I own are an AR15 carbine and a. 308 M14 Socom (shorter barrel). I know the M14 works against people, but how does it stand against the deer in this area? Also, since I am unfamiliar with the terrain, what optics do you all recommend? There's an ACOG 3x on it now.
Thanks.

I have killed deer with an M-1 Garand, M-1A, FN-FAL, SKS and an AK.

Just pick a soft or hollow point (I like the Remington Fusion SP) in ~150 gr.

A state can have varied terrain so it is hard to tell just what you'll be into, but for a brush gun the SOCOM and 3X would be dyn-o-mite!!

WARNING- Most states have a magazine capacity limit and I'll bet Alabama does. You will need to find a mag that is legal to hunt with, or you can make a 20 round legal by taking it apart and putting a wood block under the follower that would make it conform which is what I did for the FN-FAL. But be prepared for a game warden to check you out if he sees you.

Yes, but the deer should be carrying an AK-47 and wearing a red bandanna according to every video game I've ever played. ;)

308 is 308 is 308. Just check local restrictions as mentioned.

I pounded a 300+ lb hog with my M1A in .308 so it should be more than enough on a soft shouldered deer.

If you will be walking any distance make sure you get a sling. That's a pretty heavy rifle to be lugging around. And yes, it will drop a deer.
