I like to hunt them with a 22 rifle with subsonics. Woods where I live are filthy with them. I had this old guy that would take all I could get him but now that he's gone I don't want to just go plink them and leave them there. I have been walking the trails this fall and just watching them because I have nobody to give them to now and was just curious if anybody out here bothers with them?

Our closest relative in the Fox Squirrel, and yes we eat'em... Cooking the meat into a dumpling meal is a common way, and I've also had the meat cooked and put into a spicy-dirty rice which is good... I've even had it cook into a chinese stir fry and some that was cooked in a Gumbo and it was good... There are some guys out there with fantastic recipe's that I like to read about also... I'm gonna check back on this thread for some good eatin' ideas...

I have eaten a lot of them. Unless they are young they will tough and you should stew them until they are tender. At that point they won't have a lot of flavor, but meat just the same.

I have read here and other places that people have a repulsion to eat them. I never understood that at all. I've never passed an opportunity to eat squirrel.

My dad had us hunting squirrels as kids to get us hooked. We used to eat it all the time... I havn't tried it in probably over 15 years.

My Mom sure does, and no information given to her about their clean diet makes any difference... She won't even allow them to be cooked in her kitchen, I had to take mine to My aunt's house for cooking... She calls them "limb rats", but anything that eats nuts, acorns, seeds, tree growth fungis, etc. can't be bad no matter if they're a rat or not.... Crazy...

Yeah I eat Fox Squirrels here in Kansas too...not as good as rabbit though.

Oh yeah I eat em. They are best when slow cooked but try a chicken fried recipe and you will be pleasantly surprised! I prefer the .22 mag. I really admire what a tough little critter the gray squirrel is.

Pressure cook for about 10 min to tenderize, fry like chicken, make gravy from grease in the pan to put on mashed 'taters and save some for biscuits in the morning, now thats livin'!

Yes, I had them when I lived down south. Not bad eating if you put it in a stew.

...field expedient snacking. Better if you have a little seasoning in your backpack... salt, pepper, tobasco - anything.

I cooked a Robin that way when I was about 10 years old... It was like chewing a racquetball...

Yep... this one wasn't the tastiest thing I ever ate... just practicing fieldcraft with a few friends.

A very long time ago, a friend of mine and myself hunted squirrels in the woods behind my house.

His wife and little daughter would come out for breakfast after we got back. The little girl was watching me clean one and asked "why was I taking his costume off"?:rofl:

We ate them, but I never liked the looks of them when they were soaking in salt water.

Let your fire burn down in to coals and cook it over them. You'll have much less smoke and soot on your meat. You can also wrap it in a skunk cabbage leaf and cook it that way. The skunk cabbage leaf is all water so it will steam the meat as it cooks. Mmmmmmmmmmm

Better than rabbit? Cottontail? I tried cottontail for the first time this last year and was pretty impressed, if squirrel is that good I may have to try it. They are all over this area anyway, would be good hunting with my son:)

yes i do. good as stew meat. good in chili. good in dirty rice. i like it better in chili, then in dirty rice. cook it for the office, everbody eats it up real fast.

Well, we weren't trying to make a big fire, just trying out a magnesium start stick. while we were doing it, this fella started chattering at us. We had small game tags, so what the hell. Again, just having fun exploring the national forest and practicing some fieldcraft. Learned how to make rope from yucca plants that day too.
