View Full Version : best shotgun for a lefty

Was watching the new Magpul shotgun DVDs while drinking some koolaid this weekend. Lots of nice looking pumps and semiautos, but I think the only one that has an ambi safety is a Mossberg, which isn't top of the heap. I know it's a pretty decent gun, but it might be better to have one of those Benellis or 1187s. I know they make lefty 870s, does anyone know if the safety is reversed on those, and is there any reason it couldn't be done on, say, a stock 1187?

I should add I have an Ithaca 37 I like (bottom feed/eject), and I'm not bothered by right side ejection, I just want to be able to work a safety without wrapping my fingers around the trigger guard.

Mossberg is it unless you find a left handed gun or have a smith switch it over.

My 590A1 is a better gun than the 870 Express I had years ago. The 590 is about equal to the 870 Express HD.

The only way to reverse the safety on an 11-87 or 870 is to get the right hand eject left hand safety trigger plate assembly from Remington.

Remington only makes on left hand 870 and it is a sporting model. If you want to see a left hand tactical build to 870 police go to ( and click on the red link, Left hand Tactical. That can give you some ideas if you want to build one. And no, they do not make a left hand barrel under 28" so the older Wingmaster 20" rifle sight barrels is you main option.

An FN SLP can have the safety reversed. I don't believe there was one represented in the dynamic shotgun dvds. For the drills, it acts like a cross between the Benelli and the Remington 1100. I like mine.

Browning pumps & Mossberg have the safety on top. Us lefties are used to shell flying accross our veiw but the safety on the wrong side is a problem. Remington makes left hand models in 1100, 1187 and 870. Double barrels, over & unders and side by side have tang safties and are left AND right freindly. Winchester used to make a left hand auto shotgun but hard to find as did Fab Arm (H&K)

I have a FNH SLP Mark 1 and was pleased to find out the the safety is convertable.

FWIW, all cross bolt safeties can be modified to left hand but not back to right hand. Williams used to make lefthand safeties but stop after being sued by a right hand person after an accident. That is what a person at Brownells told me years ago. Being left handed I have a supply of Ruger 10-22 Left hand safeties. Some guns such as the Winchester Model 100 auto and Model 88 lever action the safties can be "turned around" for left hand use without permently modifiying them.

Mossberg, which isn't top of the heap.

Where'd you get that idea?

Yeah, there's a ton of Mossbergs in use by the USMC, USN, US Army (USAF uses the 870 mostly).

I'm pricing model 590A1s, looks like a lot of gun for under 500.00.

I'm kind of meh about my Mossberg. If you notice on the magpul dvd, it's the gun having the most manipulation hold-ups. Yes, it works and has a proven track record, but there are better guns out there (though maybe not in the price range). The main thing I don't like about the Mossberg is the safety position. It works fine with a traditional stock, but with a pistol grip stock (not pistol grip only) it becomes more of a hassle to operate. I prefer my FN SLP. In fact, I don't think I've fired it since buying the SLP.
