What's your take on S & W 1911's? I am still looking for my first 1911 and would welcome any advice you may have because I trust your knowledge. Price would be anywhere from $600 to $1000. Thanks.

No problem.

I like both my S&W 1911s quite a bit. They're reliable and well built. The external extractor doesn't bother me at all.

I wouldn't spend a grand on an SW1911 though. The base model can be had for $700-$800.

I saw a few good deals pop on this site for S&W 1911's don't know if there's any now or not I haven't really kept up.

Glad you like it, but unfortunately the STI Trojan is a far better 1911 for $1000, in my opinion.

SW1911 are good up to $800 or so. Anything more than that is too much for what you get.

The Performance Center 1911s are another story. :)

What makes the STI Trojan better for the money? I thought they were now foreign manufactured? Just curious.

P.S. Mine is off to the Perf Cnt as soon as Smith wakes up ... on their dime or a full refund. lol My LH safety lever fell off at the range. So, you are correct. And man, am I hot. lol

Continued:

OK, well I just got the call from S&W ... they are giving me my money back. Thank you S&W. So, now that experience is over (ugh)!

And I do not go down the road again I will put a call into STI ... and I am scanning Quack's link as I post. Any good STI dealers come recommended?

So a $1000 for a 1911 that had a part fall off is worth it?

It is the STI Spartan that is a Filipino gun with some US action parts.
As far as I know, the Trojan is still built in the Republic of Texas.

Indeed, the Trojan is built in TX. I picked up a Spartan and honestly after I got that gun home, I could have cared less whether it came from the US or Japan. The thing is sweet, accurate, and fitted better than a $1400 Kimber I HAD awhile ago

I don't know squat about the quality of STI but I am in love with the Shadow.

Anybody care to chime in with some info on this one? Like are they worth it for the price? Around here the cheapest I have seen them is around 1200. Anyone own one. I know I know Bac not long enough but I am more into the 4.25" and under 1911s.

The Spartan has always been built in the Philippines and the Trojan has always been built in the states.

As a dealer we see it every once in a while with S&W ambi safety's. They are MIM parts and if you are a lefty you are more likely to break the ambi on a S&W 1911.

They aren't as bad as the ambis on the Taurus, that's for sure. :whistling:

That nice! I had the STI Guardian, and LOVED it. STI customer service is amazing as well.

Also curious myself what makes it better for $1000. I've never even held an STI so don't know...

They're more accurate too.

Agreed. I think the entry S&W's are a tremendous bang for the buck. But i do believe in the $1000 range guns that the STI is the best there is. Id say it was close in years past with the Dan Wessons but since they raised their prices, the STI has been left in a class of its own.

Year, the $750 SW1911 is great, but I wouldn't pay a grand for the same thing with different features.

I normally would not buy a S&W 1911, but I did acquire one on a trade. I have been pleased with it so far.

I've never seen a new TRP for a $1000. I've seen a few used ones but as for a new 1911 in the $1000. range it's probably the STI Trojan or the Ranger if you want a commander size.

New?

The TRP isn't a $1000 1911, so it never enters my $1000 1911 discussions.

Its one of the best under $1500. :)

Good job. Dealer cost on them is over $1000.
