View Full Version : AR15 in Chain Stores
My question is this: when is it going to get as easy and/or common to get non-.223 caliber AR15's in mainstream stores? Most of them that stock bolt and lever guns do so in 2 or 3 calibers at least for each of them and don't think twice about it, but for some reason trying to find a 6.8 or 6.5 in a lot of stores that carry DPMS, Bushmaster, and Remington AR's is like asking for an ugly chick at the Playboy Mansion or a good looking one in a nursing home. Seriously, what's the problem? There's PLENTY for sale online, plenty of people are buying them, lots of stuff is written about them so people aren't in the dark, and it gives people something they can and will buy and would gladly buy locally if they could to at least save shipping. What's the holdup?
We tried a few gunshows with "other" calibers, very very few people actually know what a 6.8 or 6.5 is, they just skim over and assume it's a 5.56. Some guy asked if it was a 6.8" barrel when it was clearly a 16". I think most stores have tried a few of the odd calibers but they probably sit on the shelf for a year tying up funds so the stores just never purchased more. Most stores also buy the cheapest ARs they can find because most consumers think they are all black and must all be the same so why not buy the cheapest thing on the wall, the other calibers aren't cheap.
Some guy in Colorado Springs thought Colt, DPMS and RRA were the only companies that make AR15s he thought he was smart telling his girlfriend we couldn't possibly have manufactured AR15s LOL.
I think Bill Alexander said they had only sold 5-6000 in the 7 years he has been making the Grendel. I heard that Barrett never sold all 1000 468s that were made. So if you consider DPMS made 95,000 rifles in 2008 5000 of those may have been other calibers.
We gave up trying to sell to shops, lowered our prices and sell direct now, we sell more and the customers pay less by cutting out the middle man, the local taxes pay for shipping and in some cases a lot more.
It seems like a marketing mistake then to have named the 6.8 by its metric measurement instead of calling it .270 AR or something like that. When you say.270 people understand what that is and want to buy it.
